Fulford Golf Club retain place in first division

Fulford GC players ramped up home advantage to finish a creditable fourth and retain their place in the first division of the Yorkshire Union of Golf Clubs’ team championship.

The home quartet of George Forder (rounds of 69 and 74), Andrew Newton (76 and 77), Damon Coulson (77 and 79) and Ross Earnshaw (80 and 88) produced a total of 610, which put them just nine adrift of winners Rotherham. Hessle (604) were second while Renishaw Park notched the same 610 total as the hosts.

But while there was joy for Fulford, Malton & Norton GC were just edged out of the top-flight.

The foursome of Chris Halley (70 and 74), Michael Eyre (84 and 75), James Walsh (83 and 80) and Richard Brown (84 and 79) totalled 629 for 13th place that saw them, and five clubs below them, relegated to division two.

Pike Hills GC finished in mid-position, ninth place secured by Martin Brown, pictured above, (74 and 78), Adrian Lount (80 and 79) Craig Smith (78 and 75) and Alister Smith (79 77).

• HENRY Smith, captain of Fulford GC in 1976, has died, aged 88. He had been a member of the Heslington -based club for 55 years.
