York City boss Gary Mills hails Dan Parslow

YORK City manager Gary Mills revealed that utility man Dan Parslow has become the first name on his team-sheet after the former Wales under-21 international laid on both goals in last night’s 2-2 draw at Morecambe.

Parslow was also described as “one hell of a player” by Mills, who switched the former Cardiff City centre-half from right-back into an anchoring midfield role at the Globe Arena.

The Minstermen fell behind twice against the Shrimps with Bootham Crescent old boy Richard Brodie converting a penalty, conceded by Chris Doig, and Stewart Drummond also netting.

But, in between, a far-post header by Parslow teed up Chris Smith for the first equaliser and the Welshman then used his right boot to deliver an excellent cross that Ashley Chambers converted at the second attempt on 86 minutes.

Delighted City boss Mills said: “I’ve got nothing but praise for Dan Parslow. As a player, since the first day I walked into the club, the difference in him has been immense.

“He’s always had heart and desire. He just needed to have a bit more belief in himself but we are certainly producing one hell of a player now.

“He’s grasped how to play and has already played in three positions this season. Even in pre-season, he was my first name on the team sheet.”

Mills admitted the manner in which his side conceded both goals last night disappointed him but that he was thrilled to get the club’s first point back in the Football League.

He added: “I’m delighted for everybody connected with the club, particularly for the players, because it’s always important mentally to get your first point on the table. I was disappointed to concede two goals with another penalty and one from a set piece but, if we had been livelier in the first half, we might have had a couple more goals ourselves and I’m delighted that we have come back twice.

“That shows we have character and heart and it’s happened so many times over the last 12 months. I don’t want to keep coming back though because I think we are an even better side if we can get our noses in front.”

Mills gave Danny Blanchett his debut for City at left-back and was also pleased with the former Burton defender’s contribution, saying: “He had a steady game and did well.

“I did not see their winger cause him too many problems and the game will have done him good. He trained very well on Monday and that probably got him the shirt.

“That sends out a message to other players that might be out of the team because, if you get in my face with the way you train, that can get you back in the side.”

It sounds as if Danny Parslow is benefiting from a better quality of coaching staff and tactics and long may his good form continue. His contribution to the team in gaining the "double" was one of the highlights. Once this team settle down, we will do well with our passing game and at the fifteen games in stage, I believe we will be a top half team and pushing on! COYR.

I am quite happy to admit that 2-3 years ago I thought Danny Parslow wasn't good enough for conference level. however, my opinion has changed completely since then and I now look at him as being 'Mr York City'. along with McGurk and Ingham I think they really do care about the club and wearing that shirt, keep up the good work.

Parslow had another great game last night. He seemed to be everywhere, almost taking on the Scott Kerr role. To cap a wonderful performance he made both goals.
To answer Duffy's question, Morecambe's striker, Ellison I think, actually missed three easy chances. City weren't at their best but put in a lot of effort and deserved the point.

some people will always want to knock danny parslow as he may not be the most glamorous of players. however, he is honest and one of the most valuable players we have had in decades. he deserves his place in the team and the plaudits he is receiving. give him a break and focus your efforts on supporting him and the team

I doubt anyone would question DP's loyalty or commitment. However, it does worry me that recognised midfielders were being overlooked for a good part of last season in favour of defenders playing out of position - a trend that seems to continuing this season.
Lee Bullock may not be a 46-game ever present this season, but I bet he didn't expect to be overlooked for a central defender.

YCFC115 says...

A limited central defender at best, make shift right back but certainly not a midfield player and not a patch on Kerr. Nice bloke, loyal, dependable and a proper captain that you can rely upon to ring around the players when they are late for the coach.

Bullock was dreadful on Saturday. The lads did great last night to get a point but only because of some dreadful misses. We are going to struggle with this squad.

Sorry - in coming!!!!

I have never been a great fan of Parslow at right back, partly because of his wayward distribution but I was pleasantly surprised at his performances as CB or holding midfielder last season. He rarely put a foot wrong and did everything asked of him. It was the same towards the back end of the previous season where, in my opinion, he was MOM or thereabouts for quite a few home games. If he's doing the job, it is up to the specialist midfielders to up their game to get above him in the pecking order. It is a team game and there is no point players getting precious about their positions

I agree that Parslow is not a right back. Challinor and Odebanjo much better. However, last night Danny was immense ! Won many balls in the air, great distribution and made two goals. A man of the match performance if ever I saw one ! Yes he does make mistakes sometimes but tell which which City player doesn`t ?!

Pick players on form and Danny certainly merits a place in the team on his current form. Twinkle toes he may not be but he is vital to the team at the moment and we need players who will run all day and put in a shift, he also has a knack of being in the right place at the right time, at both ends of the pitch. As GM says if players put in the effort on the training pitch and catch his eye they will be considered. Well done DP

Danny P is great when the rest of the team put the same effort in we'll be fine.Although I think a few of the players need a bit of game time in this League to sharpen up and gain confidence.Still need more punch up front-and need to get that first goal. COME ON CITY!

We were second best last night. Had Morcambe taken their chances, we could have conceded five or six. We were poor going forward too.

A great spirit to comeback but we were out lasses by a far bigger and more skilful team.

Brodie was a handful all night, looking quick, strong and with good movement. Sorry to say but we are looking like league strugglers unless something improves very quickly.

How refreshing, another negative doom-and-gloom 'fan' on the press website. This time last season, some people were saying we were heading for mid-table obscurity; I said we would be promoted. Look how that turned out! Mills has given us cause for nothing but the highest optimism, he deserves our support.

IMO Doig is better than Smith. More assured as a defender. I've only seen the game on Saturday so I don't know if he struggled last night but I wouldn't take Doig out of the team. Maybe Mills just needs to pull his finger out and buy a new centre back and centre forward- being all sentimental to the players who got him up last season won't take the club forward much further.

Before YO1 asks, no I wasn't there last night but I was at Doncaster and the Wycombe match so can express an opinion. You can get a feel from the Radio commentary however and Chris Jones in particular is never shy of being critical if the performance warrants - that was not however the case last night where we seemed to put on a good performance and certainly seemed to have our share of the attacking play.Brodie in fact was not mentioned that much at all.To say however that we are looking like league strugglers is however if nothing else premature after 2 games and frankly I believe hugely wide of the mark.It is I know now another season but I am sure i am not alone in being absolutely flabbergasted at the lack of belief in Mills and the team, and general negativity being widely shown on this forum by some contributors!

I believe in Gary Mills and I am confident he can evaluate the problems better than anyone.

I choose to base my opinion on actually watching the game rather than radio commentary.

I applauded the team and cheered them on to the last minute. I'm expressing my own opinion on factual evidence not on third hand armchair interpretation.

We were also playing a team that had beaten Blackpool and had won their first game (in their own back yard) - we were always likely to be second best. What I like about this team is that they don't give up. Saturday was a learning curve but at least we are off the mark.

Two people can watch the same game and walk away with both negative and positive conclusions - it is only the second game for goodness sake. If we are in the middle of the table by May I'll be happy - anything higher and I will be ecstatic.

the third hand interpretation is from 2 experienced YCFC followers in Barry Parker & Chris Jones. Their opinions are often unbiased and credible (not always) and it does give you an impression of how the team has performed. The team is evolving still and learning all the time. Fergie said Everton just hoofed it up field to Fellaini but what was the score in that game, and my impression of that game which I watched was very different. Lets not be irrational after 2 league games. In Mills we trust

On current form I would say yes. I like Doig, but he's made costly mistakes in both league games so far. I didn't see Fyfield do much wrong on Saturday and prefer him at centre back than left back. Based on his performances at the end of last season and the beginning of this, i see no reason to criticise C.Smith. It would be good to see McGurk in the current line up, but for the time being I'd go with Fyfield and Smith

Two games in and question marks already about both the fullback and centre half positions does not bode well. We still have 10 days or so to strengthen the defence and I think it's needed.

Their are some big clubs with a lot more revenue than York in this league. Mills has being loyal to the team from last season and also a lot are not experienced at this leval. Theirs a big difference to winning a fa cup match and consistently performing at that leval every week. Given time our performances will improve If not Gary Mills will do his best to get players that can improve the team.

Thirty five posts and no one has had a pop at Duffy so far... must be a record!!

Everyone on the thread has valuable opinions, however, for what its worth I feel that two games is not enough for us to be classified as relegation certainties. GM has made changes after game one and got a point at a difficult venue against a form team in game two. That is progress. Yes, I too think another striker would undoubtedly help us but Mills isn't a bad operator in the transfer market...As the changes between Saturday and Tuesday show he is willing to shake things up if he is not happy. For now I am going to trust the man who got us to league two to make an impression in the division.

Yeah Duffy give it a couple of weeks and no doubt the fickle support will have had a go at therest of the team , unless we win of course and then everyone will be brilliant , and if Walker scores he will revert to godlike status.

and we all know where the ended up.

chill out we dont have a devine right to just turn up collect 3 points. There are another 11 players out there trying win a game too. We are finding our feet and its work in progress. judge the team after 15 matches not in the 1st week of the season.for goodness sake.

We all want our team to do well and win every game scoring 5 goals and not letting the other team a shot on target.

some of you it would seem just can not wait to be negative yet slow to praise the lads when its deserved

I have to agree that people should not be spreading doom and gloom predictions, after just two league games. For it will take at least ten games before we have a better idea about our prospects. Some of the comments however are understandable. Bearing in mind Gary Mills ambitions for the club this season. For if first impressions are anything to go by, I am also beginning to wonder if Gary has strengthened the squad enough to justify those promotion aspirations. My wishes for the club are not quite as bold as Garys. I never want to see York City drop out of the Football League again. So I would be delighted just to see us finish around mid-table, at the end of our first season back. I have great faith that we CAN achieve that.
