CHAMPIONS Old Malton St Mary’s opened the defence of their premier league crown with a 3-0 victory at Nestlé Rowntree as the York Minster Engineering Football League season kicked into gear.
The Ryedale side, who went through their championship-winning season unbeaten, bossed the game from the off and Simon Cooke put them ahead after 15 minutes.
Dean Nuttall made it 2-0 on 24 minutes and, although Nuttall blazed a 30th-minute penalty high and wide, the win was confirmed in the second half through Danny Fogg.
There was no opening-day joy for promoted duo Selby RSSC and Terrington Glory, who both suffered home defeats.
Glory matched visitors Dringhouses for 87 minutes on their top-flight debut but ’Houses took the honours as Tom Bissett poked home the only goal three minutes from time following a goalmouth scramble. Selby RSSC lost 4-1 to Dunnington , last season’s runners-up, in their first-ever premier division encounter. A 15th-minute Rob Hart header separated the sides at the break before Jimmy Willmoth and Matthew Playle made it 3-0 to Dunnington. Shane Caulkill reduced the arrears for Selby before Tom Richards completing the scoring. Huntington crashed 5-0 at Wigginton , who led 3-0 at the break thanks to goals from Matt Tiplady, Scott Stewart and Eddie Clapham, who netted from penalty spot.
Grasshoppers added further goals from Lee McQuade and Jamie Wilstrop. York RI chalked up their fifth consecutive win over Hamilton Panthers , with Nick Hutchinson’s goal securing a 1-0 win.
Riccall United came from 2-1 down to beat visitors Poppleton 5-2.
Luke Berridge cancelled out Tom Littlewood’s opener for the hosts before Adam Ferguson put Poppleton 2-1 up. Littlewood and Liam Brown put Riccall back in charge at half-time and there were second-half goals from Ryan Watson and Wayne Brooke.
