Tennis: Key difference lifts Dunnington

AFTER exchanging the lead of the Fulford Ladies Invitation Tennis League all season, Dunnington took the division one title from York on games difference after beating Poppleton 86-22.

York also beat Fulford with captain Karen Retief, left, and the talented Kathryn Maude having two 9-3 wins in a 74-34 victory.

Knaresborough, York 2, David Lloyd or Boston Spa could all yet win division two with Spa having still to play York and David Lloyd.

Wigginton had their first win beating Appleton Roebuck with a great team effort led by Sarah Blacker and Lorraine Waudby with three good wins in a 61-47 success.

The division three crown was won by Dunnington after beating close rivals Wistow, against whom Joyce Rhodes and Sue Sumner starred, and Starbeck. In the latter win, Denise Bolam and Jess Mitchell top-scored with 25 games.

Pocklington and Boston Spa go up from division four with the duo tied at the top with one game leftto determine the champions.

Pocklington meet the in-form Tollerton, while Boston Spa are up against a Sutton-upon-Derwent team bidding to beat the drop.

Cawood are making a fight to stay in division five after drawing 54-54 with Dunnington.

Barbara Plummer and Liz Stacey had a good 8-4 win in the last round, while Cawood’s Lorraine Bishop and Jane Hill also had a 8-4 win to finish a fine match.
