York City's Ashley Chambers thrilled to bridge seven-year League Cup gap

YORK City attacker Ashley Chambers cannot wait for his second taste of League Cup action, having made his professional debut in the competition at the age of 15.

As a schoolboy, Chambers created club history when he was used as an 89th-minute substitute during Leicester City’s 2-1 victory over Blackpool back in 2005, and he remains the youngest ever footballer to play for the Foxes.

The Leicester-born forward, now 22, never turned out in the tournament again for his hometown club or for either Wycombe and Grimsby during loan spells at those two teams.

But, having helped the Minstermen secure promotion back to the Football League with a goal in May’s 2-1 Blue Square Bet Premier play-off final against Luton, Chambers is now looking forward to today’s curtain-raising first round tie at Doncaster in what is now known as the Capital One Cup.

He said: “I’ve still got all the memorabilia and pictures from that game for Leicester but it seems so long ago now. People can’t believe I’m only 22 and it’s really exciting to be in the competition again.

“At 15, the whole experience felt weird and surreal but it was great and I wouldn’t swap it for the world. It made me what I am today and made me a lot stronger.”

Chambers was at his grandmother’s house during a lunch break from school when he learned that he was to report for first-team duty at the end of his lessons that day.

He said: “My nan lived around the corner from school so I used to get my lunch there. She told me that day that I had to ring my mum at work and she then told me I had to be at the football that night.

“I said ‘I know I have to be there, I’m a ball boy’. But she said “No, you have to be there in your tracksuit because you’re in the squad’.

“I thought she’d probably made a mistake but my lessons that afternoon were a bit of a blur.”

Current Scotland boss Craig Levein was in charge at the Walkers Stadium back then and Chambers revealed the former Hearts centre-back made no fuss about the fledgling teenager’s call-up, even if he was the butt of a spot of dressing room banter from some of the senior pros.

“The manager did not treat me any differently,” Chambers remembered. “I was just like another player in the squad.

“I turned up and he announced the team and subs. There were a few jokes afterwards though.

“I remember Jason Wilcox saying I would be able to get some new school books with my win bonus. Unfortunately, I never got that (the win bonus)!”

Due to his late introduction, Chambers had little chance to make an impression.

The 5ft 8in forward did, however, make one slightly surprising contribution. saying: “I got one touch with my head funnily enough and then the final whistle went.

“I would have liked to have had more of a run out but it was still great. I got a terrific reception from the fans and I had a lot of friends in the stand.

“All my mates, who were in the academy with me, were actually ball boys too. They were sat watching me on the side of the pitch, which was a bit crazy.

“Friends and teachers were coming up to me the next day at school to tell me they had seen me playing.

“The teachers were really happy for me and it was good recognition for what at the time wasn’t a great school really so it was good for everybody involved.”

Should City negotiate a way past Doncaster, Chambers is in no doubt as to who he would like to face in the second round, saying: “I would love to draw Leicester.

“It’s a massive, massive club and it would be brilliant to go back on a personal level but it would be great for the club as well because it would be another big game for us to play in.”

NIGHTMARE! Tuned into Radio York on the internet to listen to the game today with great excitement only to find out THIS SEASON citys games will not be live on Radio York on the internet due to contractual restrictions. It is live on local radio on FM and AM but NOT in the internet. Does anyone know a work around for this or another way of listening to this seasons games on the net? This is a disaster!

I'm in the US, and was hoping to tune in online... instead, i've arranged for my brother to play radio york into his ipod microphone, sent to me via skype! Don't see why the football league have decided to inconvenience fans like this, but at least it sounds like City are playing well!

It was a poor game against a Doncaster team who have had a 75% reduction in playing budget and far from the finished article.

The game highlighted our main areas for concern are up front and our full backs. Jason tried hard but again struggled against two big centre backs. How long before we lose him through injury or fatigue? When he had to come off we have no-one to replace him. Reedy's injury was really unfortunate but we shouldn't be in the position of starting the season with only one striker.

Both Pars and Jamal did well to stifle Rivers widemen but neither was able to offer much going forward with several promising moves breaking down when they were given possession going forward. It looks like Blanchett and Johnson have failed to impress GM.

I'm sure GM is well aware of all this and is trying to find the right player to bring in after missing out on Shaw and Connell. Rumoured we are trying to sign Spencer from Hyde. I hope so because we looked solid defensively but devoid of ideas up front yesterday.

Good and accurate post, Blanchett is already looking like the Henderson signing of this season. We HAVE to bring in another striker to support Walker. A quality striker will make a huge difference to where we finish this season.

This is from "T.O.O.A.B"

Sharon Shortle (BBC Radio York) writes . . .

Re: Radio commentaries (TOOAB, Issue 242)

Because of Football League commentary rights, the BBC can’t put commentary on its websites, like we have done for the last few years.

That means, unfortunately, that for the time being, York City commentaries will only be available on radio.

The football club is currently waiting to have a new website built by the company that looks after Football League clubs, and when that happens, we should be able to put our commentary on to there.

Both us at BBC Radio York and the club have been trying to hurry this process up, but so far without success.

It’s something neither us or the club have any control over at the moment.

While we still have the rights to broadcast the commentary on the radio, the agreement with the Football League does not include online rights for any of the BBC Local Radio stations.

We’re hoping that York City will soon move up the queue and get the website they need

I note for this match at Doncaster their was a crowd of 5,000 plus, is a new stadium with a capacity of 6,000 really going to be enough, I think not.

I spoke to a club representative who said the total crowd would be about 4000 as pre season support at Donny had been poor. They had almost as many stewards(bouncers?) one of whom outside the entrance used the "F" word loudly a few times though there were ladies in the very near vicinity. The ones inside at the bar area were not much better, just chatted among themselves about their next police station appearance. The total number could have been cut by 50% at least.
Apart from that good game, decent ground and good performance from City except 2 of the penalties!

Doncaster looked like a team who will struggle in Division 1. We certainly didnt look a league below them. But we simply did not have the class to finish them off. Our small forwards were easily held by the big robust Donny defenders. I honestly could not see either team scoring until Coulson fired in that cracker of a goal. Once Donny got their penalty it was always going to be penalties, as City were out on their feet during extra time. I prayed that we would avoid penalties at Wembley, and thankfully we did. But once this game went into penalties there was only going to be one winner. I think Coulsons spot kick went higher than the stand, and Matty Blairs was nearly as bad. Not too disappointed though, as I didnt go along with Gary Mills pre-match confidence. We need some height and power up front, to mix it up a bit, for our league programme.

Can't believe some of the comments on here - so early in the season and already veering towards negativity! I thought there were a lot of positives from that performance yesterday and most importantly so did Gary Mills - yes there is some tweaking of the squad to be done and I am sure it will happen.Despite some comments above Doncaster still had some (for this level) high profile players on show (eg Cotterill/Coppinger) yet for long periods we bossed the game and played some good stuff.I am sure I will be called a "happy clapper" for such positivity but I was proved right last season unlike some who wrote us off towards the play off run in! Finally it's Sunday PM yet still no report or even result of match on Press website - unless I've missed it?

Starting early this season then. The posts above are very accurate, let's not have another season of abusing fellow posters if they make constructive comments. Tell you what, you do that and I promise not to call you a happy clapper again.

I really don't see that Sixtyfourfive has "abused fellow posters" here. Seems like a bit of an overreaction to him expressing a bit of annoyance at some seemingly undeserved negativity. We've gone toe to toe with a side that are expected to do very well in League 1 this year and have been unlucky not to come away with a result but instead of people praising York they instead come to the conclusion that "Doncaster...will struggle in League One"!
As for the second striker issue I agree that it'd be great to get a quality second striker in but where is that player going to come from? And if we did find a suitable available player (as we probably did with Shaw and Connell) all GM can offer them is a back-up role to Walker. Who can blame them for looking elsewhere for better opportunities for playing time. It's very easy us saying on here we need this and that but reality is very different.
And let's not write off Blanchett after one game in which he didn't even play, eh? I remember plenty of great City players that took a while to settle in and win us over.

The comment was more about the abuse people like myself were getting last season for making constructive comments, there needs to be less sensitivity to other posters views. Not sure why you think Doncaster are expected to do well, they have cut their playing budget by 75% and could well get relegated. The comments on another striker and the full backs are justified in my view, we had no one yesterday who could take on the big Donny centre halves and Fyfield is just not a left back, we are at our best with the full backs bombing forward and thats not Fyfield and Parslow although we have Oyebanjo to come back IF he can stay fit. Positives fir me are that J Smith is as good as I told everyone he would be( signing of the close season) and Bullock backs him up well, with Kerr and Paddy we have a midfield to challenge the best in the division. Coulson will also do well in my view. We are not that far off a top 7 team, get another quality striker and left back in and we could challenge.

Couldn't agree more, us 'happy clappers' were 100% right last season, which I'm sure irritates the moaning contingent immensely. It sounded like a good match on the radio, we clearly defended pretty well as they didn't score in open play, J. Smith and Coulson sounded good, as far as I can see we should be pushing for the play-offs (or, dare I say it, the auto-promotion spots!) by the end of the season.

Also, just found a video of the penalty-conceding foul on youtube. It looked very soft to me, there was some contact but their forward only decided to hit the deck once the ball was out of his control. Strange decision.
