Bowls: John Cooper crowned York Veterans singles champion

SCARCROFT’S John Cooper was crowned York Veterans Bowling Association Lord Mayor’s singles champion at West Park.
Cooper beat Barbican’s Peter Durkin 21-16 in the final and was presented with the trophy by deputy Lord Mayor of York, Coun David Horton .
In the semi-finals, Cooper had beaten Barry Johnson 15-13, while Durkin ousted Haxby Road’s Alan Clapham 15-10.
Wigginton ‘A’ won the final of the Maddison Cup final, beating Wigginton ‘B’ 18-12.
The ‘A’ team were John Winterburn, John Parsons, Collin Ellis and Dave Jervis, with the ‘B’ team ranks including Dave Imeson, Fred Whur, John Baxter and Bill Thomlinson.
Lord Mayor’s winner Cooper plays for St Clement’s in the York CIU League and he has reached the finals of all three knockout competitions.
He will take on Arthur Dunbar, of Railway Institute, in the singles while also teaming up with Harry Marshall for the finals of the four-wood and veterans pairs.
All three games will be held at the Railway Institute green in Ashton Lane.

Meanwhile, Railway Institute have slipped to second place in the York CIU Evening League after defeats by South Bank and St Clement’s.
Clarence have gone to the top of the league by four points after they won their game in hand against Acomb 7-1 and their game at Tramways.
South Bank’s third successive win has taken them to the top of the Afternoon League, while St Clement’s ‘B’, whose latest game against Burton Lane ‘B’ was postponed, are two points behind the leaders.
Meanwhile, Holgate WMC took a large step towards adding the York Amateur Bowling Association division one title to their Williamson Cup after beating RI Amateurs 6-2. But their momentum was stalled when losing 7-1 at Stewart.
Hull Road Park were knocked off the top of division two by Nestlé Rowntree, who won 6-2.
