Duo hope they can win in Cancun

STAXTON golfer David White’s prize trip to Mexico cannot come soon enough as he revels in a notable pro-am success.

White and Ganton Golf Club professional Gary Brown won the Virgin Atlantic PGA National Pro-am qualifier at York’s Fulford GC to secure a place in the SkyCaddie and BMW-supported £30,000 final to be held at the Moon Palace Golf and Spa Resort at Cancun in December.

Victory came as a shock as the duo, having carded a nine-under-par round of 63, left for home, not expecting the score to be good enough. They later got a call to say they had won on countback, ahead of two other pairs from Barnard Castle and Keighley.

Said White: “Hopefully we can go there and enjoy ourselves. Gary’s played in the final before and won it. Hopefully that experience will help.”

Brown’s previous victory was in 2004, when the final was played in San Lorenzo, Portugal. This time it will be held at the Moon Palace Resort home of a 27-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature Design golf course, with 16 PGA professionaland amateur teams taking part.
