Match report: Pickering Town 2, York City 6

York City’s Lee Bullock sees his header tipped over the bar by Pickering ’keeper Arran Reid York City’s Lee Bullock sees his header tipped over the bar by Pickering ’keeper Arran Reid

A BRACE apiece from John McReady and Paddy McLaughlin along with goals from Michael Potts and Reece Kelly saw York City continue their pre-season programme with a 6-2 win at Pickering Town .

Liam Salt got both goals for the Northern Counties East League premier division outfit after the break, the first the Minstermen have conceded since returning to action.

The Pikes were a far bigger threat going forward than Harrogate Railway on Tuesday and York manager Gary Mills may be concerned at the opportunities the home side created after the break.

But he can be far more satisfied with his team’s efforts going forward – with the scoring tally up to 17 goals over the first three warm-up encounters.

Mills rotated his squad, making five changes from the side which began at Railway. Jon Challinor, Daniel Parslow , Jamal Fyfield , trialist Oliver Banks and Potts all came in for a starting berth.

They got off to an explosive start.

Banks popped a quick ball over the top for Jason Walker to collect on three minutes. He passed back to Michael Coulson, who unleashed a shot which smashed off the underside of the bar.

Pickering had Arran Reid to thank for keeping them level on 19 minutes. He produced a superb stop to tip Bullock’s point blank header, from Coulson’s cross, over the bar.

Bullock should have got on the scoresheet 60 seconds later, when contriving to head wide of Reid’s left-hand post when found unmarked by Coulson’s corner.

The Pikes were on the back foot but they were by no means out of the game.

Former City winger Liam Shepherd stung Michael Ingham ’s hands mid-way through the first half when unleashing a smart drive from the left edge of the penalty area – finishing off an incisive move from the home team.

City’s obvious class was still telling, however.

Reid did brilliantly to get down and smother Potts’ shot after he was found with a delightful ball in the box by Banks.

But he could not deny him on 36 minutes.

Shepherd stretched to clear on the right side but his attempt only found Challinor.

The defender played a simple pass to a waiting Potts and he turned and curled his shot over the despairing Reid, who got a touch on it, and into the top corner.

Despite that, though, Pickering might have felt aggrieved to not be level at the break.

Two minutes from half-time, Steve Baxter missed the target from about six yards when the ball came to him following a defensive mix-up – his shot skied over the crossbar.

As has been the custom, Mills made a host of half-time changes and one of them, McReady, had an immediate impact.

The midfielder picked up the ball in the middle of the pitch, barely a minute after the restart, and ran through the centre – untouched – before lashing a shot past Reid into the left corner.

McLaughlin then smashed a thunderbolt off the bar from six yards on 52 minutes and York were looking comfortable for their lead.

Pickering, however, had other ideas.

Shepherd was at the heart of it – a wonderful through-ball setting Pikes’ stalwart, and second half substitute, Salt away. His finish, lifted over the body of the oncoming Musselwhite, was deft.

Back came the Minstermen, Reid turned Liam Henderson ’s shot round the post and Kelly struck the right upright with a curling effort before McLaughlin made it 3-1. He collected the ball on the right side of the 16 yard box, cut past a defender and passed it into the bottom left corner past a stranded Reid.

Salt’s then rattled Musselwhite’s left post with a sharp effort before McLaughlin produced another composed strike on 71 minutes.

The Pickering man thought he’d had the final say, tucking home from a tight angle after Musselwhite could only deflect Baxter’s effort into his path with 13 minutes remaining.

But McReady’s tidy 85th-minute finish, calmly slotted into the middle of the net, and added to by Kelly’s last-minute glancing header into the top corner, set the seal on another good work out for the Minstermen.

York City: Ingham (Musselwhite 46), Challinor (Platt 46), Doig (Smith 57), Parslow, Fyfield, Banks (McLaughlin 46), Bullock (Blanchett 57), Potts (Kelly 46), Blair (Henderson 46), Walker (Reed 46), Coulson (McReady 46).

Yet another blank for Reed - looks out of touch, slower than last season - can't understand all these postings who say 'Reedy with score twenty a season - last night played down the middle not even a shot on target - out on loan?

Also another blank for Blair and Walker, who each got more than 15 goals last season - you can't base too much on these friendly games, Reed is a very good goalscorer as we've seen on countless occasions in competitive matches.

So far so good with the pre-season but Oldham will be a more real test of how the team is gelling. Been very impressed with how the club is re-organising itself for proper league football.

Would you have liked to see Brodie back at York? I know he's not the classiest but when I think of that diving header and then great solo goal in the FA Cup, there's a league player in there somewhere.

Will be interesting to see how he performs against wiser defences.
Brodies biggest down fall is his Immaturity which has manifested its self in his shocking discplinary record.
no better example of his actions v fleetwood last season after scoring at bc.
When he left York he left with best wishes but his actions against since against his former employers has done himself no favours.
Is brodie league 2 standards jury is out would i swap him for any of last seasons goal grabbers in our squad a definite NO WAY!

Confidence must be high after 17 goals in 3 friendlies but as openall hours says Oldham Athletic will be a tough test as Will Boro and Sunderland whose defences will be better organised so don't expect an avalanche of goals in the forthcoming games. What I am certain of is that all City players will be giving 100% in each game and they should be entertaining to watch.I still think we need striker back up for Walker and don't believe Reedy or Hendo are the answer in Div. 2 and I'm sure GM is still on the lookout for one.Haven't seen Oli Johnson yet and he may turn out to be the answer.Full trust in GM though-Come on City!

I'm not convinced Brodie will do that well at league two level. His lack of technical ability and disiplinery record could see him struggle against better defenders. Remember he never nailed down a first team place at a club since leaving us.

Reedy would score a lot more than Walker if he was given the starts he,s had, in my oppinion Walker has not played well since his injury, and was lucky not to cost us big time showboating in the semi, instantly becoming as popular here as he was at Luton after last years final, played ok the other night, but scored three against a poor defence, so that should be enough for Mills to keep him in the side until his next injury, Reed looks down to me, done nothing wrong since he been here, but is banging head against a brick wall, up against the mills golden boy, with a team packed full of midfieild players, there is no place for a goal poacher like him in the team, apart from limited chances off the bench, but he carn,t just keep turning it on and off like a tap like as some you expect. So maybe its time for all of us including Mills, to say thanks Jamie for helping us get back in the football league, and let him move on to try and get his sharpness / confidence back.

I think that Richard Brodie has the ability to become a decent Football League striker. He has the confidence to score goals at any level. I do agree that his discipline will need to improve though. But I wish him well at Morecambe, and yes I would have loved to see him back at York City. This will be a vital season for Jamie Reed, he now has to start repaying the fans faith in him. Always a crowd favourite, he has to take his chance if selected.

What a lovely setting for a football ground and what a lovely little town. Result was right and we are again, on the front foot as we approach the next (more difficult) round of friendlies and up to the lead up to the Donny R cup-tie on the 11th of August. I believe that we are on just the right lines and similar to last years pre-season and with the squad assembled, City fans have every reason to believe that we will be a Top Seven team come next April/May. GM and his coaching staff look to be a cut above many of their contempories in both Leagues One and Two and we are very lucky to have them. COYR.

do you really think reed would score more than walker? really?
although a decent poacher to come on in the latter part of matches reed will never have the quality or stamina to be anywhere near as good as jason walker. walker is the best all-round centre forward we have had in a long time. if you think reed should move on, i cannot disagree with you though. even though mills brought him in, i'm not sure he is a necessary part of the squad, especially in div 2

I agree with the sentiments regarding Brodie's attacking threat. What lets him down (as already discussed) is his temperament and the fact that I always thought that he went down too easily.

liam salt is one of the best non league strikers in north yorkshire.
fantastic game for a pre season, pickering tired after a good first half and york upped the tempo significantly in the second half. mclaughlin and mcready outstanding.

As i said, would you have felt the same way about him if Mansfield would have scored off the late pressure they put on us, after he missed those two great chaces towards the end, through trying to be a smart arse, for me walker has proved he hasn,t the head needed for the big occasion. Reed is a clynical finisher, do you not think he would have broke the back of net with at least one of those chances killing the game and easing our pain.

And who set up the goal for Blair at Mansfield with a perfect sublime chipped centre - Jason Walker! I have no grouse with Reed but he is not in the same class as Walker and most importantly I think most of us know that Mills feels the same.

Reedy is a goalscorer, he got stick for not being fit when he first came but he still scored virtually a goal every game he played, he got 10+ last season coming off the bench, he'd have got more starting.
