YORK Landyacht Club pilots will head to France for next month’s world championships in full flow.

Several of the club’s star names sampled success in their hosting of the final round of the British Championships – the first major regatta held at on the Elvington Airfield for 11 years.

Martin Leach triumphed in the Minis in his first competitive outing in the French built machine. Club-mate David Patterson finished a strong third.

Class 3, which comprises the largest type of yacht on the circuit, saw Chris Wilson take third place.

In the hotly-contested class five event, Mike Bawden eventually finished second just two points behind the class winner, but enough for him to retain his British title.

The Standart class saw Leach collect his second trophy of the event by finishing third.
