Cambridge United confirm capture of York City's Adriano Moke

THE Adriano Moké transfer saga finally ended with the 22-year-old midfielder leaving York City to join Cambridge United, writes Tony Kelly.

Initially bound for the Abbey Stadium, Moké’s move was called off due to a snag at the medical. But City eventually waved farewell to the former Glenn Hoddle Academy starlet, pictured, when he joined the Blue Square Bet Premier side on a one-year deal with an option for a further year. The fee was undisclosed.

City boss Gary Mills wished Moké all the best adding that even though the transfer had originally fallen through, it was “always in my head that Adriano was going to be leaving”.

Added the City manager: “He has moved on and York moves on. It has not been an upset to my plans.”

Mills’ pursuit of another striker was still ongoing, but the City leader said there was unlikely to be any signing for at least the next 48 hours.

Of his move to Cambridge, Moké said he “could not wait to get started”.

Last pre-season Gary described Moke as 'an exciting pacy winger who the fans will like to watch'. He wasn't wrong and like most fans, I thank him for his contribution to a wonderful season.

Echo above comments but once the move was announced initially it was inevitable that he would leave.

at least in later life he will be able to say, as well as attending an Academy in Portugal, he went to Cambridge! Perhaps his next move might be to Oxford.

I always liked to see him play as he changed games and the atmosphere in the ground when he came on. Always willing to take defenders on and Gary Mills deserves a lot of credit for improving a raw player. I wish Adriano well.

Good luck to Adriano Moke at Cambridge Utd. I hope its the right move for him. I could not see him starting many games for City this coming season. He was "ok" against the weaker teams, but he was not really physical enough for the tough matches. It will be interesting to see if he gets a regular game at Cambridge. I wonder how much that "undisclosed fee" was?

I thought his performance when he came on as sub in the POSF2 at Mansfield, was outstanding. In extra-time, he outpaced and outplayed the Mansfield defence and a couple of his runs should have resulted in goals - one when Jason Walker should have passed to him when he was in a much better position to score and the other, when he sprinted over half the length of the pitch to lay on an absolute sitter for Jason, who then fluffed the chance!! If he is given the opportunity to run at defences, his pace will be a real plus for Cambridge! Good luck Adriano, and thanks for your efforts with us. COYR.

Thanks for ther memories. I think the lad has been badly advised. 15 minutes getting the crowd of their seat and influencing the game leads to twenty then thirty then if you're good enough a full game.
One of the most skillful of recent years and someone who gave a lot of entertainment. Echo the comments about POSF2 and wish him well. But we move onwards and upwards...

Good luck to him and the right move. When Smith signs we will have a very strong midfield down the middle and out wide. He would have struggled to even make the bench.

To me this is an unbelievable move on the player's behalf. Of course we don't know what goes on behind the scenes, but with the choice of

a) Stay with a club that's taken you to Wembley twice, where fans and manager appreciate you, where you play a good brand of footy, at a high level in front of at least 2000 fans a week - but you'll have to fight for a place in the team

or

b) Go to a club, where you're promised a starting place (what are promises worth?) but the standard's poorer, crowds are lower and recognition and chance of success much less.

I know a sport career is short and you have to get all the money you can - but were Cambridge really offering so much more? I don't understand why you'd choose to go from recognition to mediocrity.

I hope we can get someone else to supply the magic moments that turned a few key games last year, but I'm disappointed in the player's response, and I think YCFC fans are showing their generosity of spirit by wishing him well.

Nobody is guarranteed a place anywhere, unless they perform consistently and it is hard to do that for a flair player in a struggling team. I suspect that Cambridge will be an also ran next year. Although there is no Fleetwood in the league, Luton, Mansfield, Forest Green, Wrexham, Kidderminster, Grimsby, and no doubt a surprise team, are likely to be ahead of Cambridge given activity in the close season and last seasons form. Once a team fails to string a few results together the flair players get the axe as the need to battle takes over. I hope therefore Cambridge do well and Moke gets his chance to do what he does best, but I fear this could turn out to be a step backwards in terms of his career and that he will not get the number of games he craves, perhaps not ven as many as he might have got at City. However it is true his chances at York would be limited whilst he continues to learn.
As for our prospects, most of our failings last year were because we had an unsettled defence due to injuries, suspensions and loss of form. I think at this point in time it is difficult for anyone to predict what the back four is going to be and in particular the centre back pairing. Get a settled consistently performing defence and in my view there is no reason we cannot at least reach the play offs, with the resources we have in midfield and attack.

Funnily enough I did hear a couple of seasons ago he wanted to return to York if they got promoted. However he is under contract for another two seasons. He would be perfect for the way Mills likes to play, not too far removed from Walker.

Goodbye Adriano! I don't get to many games due to travel but I remember taking two friends to the home tie against braintree early in the season, 6-1 I think it was, excellent game! When Moké came on I think one of my friends said he was going to score simply because he was called Adriano; he was not wrong and the goal he produced was spectacular and had the three of us talking about it for ages. Fantastic player and I think given a couple more seasons will mature as a player, gaining consistancy. Maybe if things don't work out at Cambridge he'd be in for a return after we seem to want lots of our former players back! He'd be welcomed back graciously I'm sure.

Seen plenty of games thank you. He hardly offered the defensive support for our makeshift right back though did he? Challinor had to work twice as hard when Moke played. Anyways it doesn't matter anymore, he's gone, someone else will take on his stepover responsibility; hardly a loss if he's not prepared to fight for his place in the team. People can stop defending him now, he wasn't committed to the club and will be better off at Cambridge, not convinced he will get the games he desires, Cambridge had some good youngsters last season.

A reasoned argument unlike "I thought he was rubbish" which was out of order. People were not defending him, they were appreciating what he could do. If you've seen plenty of games like I have over the last 30 years I don't think Adriano would come high on the rubbish front!
