York City rivals Wycombe Wanderers sign six ahead of big opener

WYCOMBE Wanderers have made six new signings ahead of their League Two curtain raiser with York City at Bootham Crescent on Saturday, August 18.

Experienced striker Richard Logan has joined the Chairboys after his five-year spell with Exeter came to an end, while Adams Park chief Gary Waddock has also secured the services of Charlton centre-back Gary Doherty, Leyton Orient midfielder Matthew Spring, Brentford winger Sam Wood and Gillingham striker Dennis Oli.

Teenage attacker Lee Angol, meanwhile, has been recruited from Tottenham’s youth academy.

Elsewhere, former Minsterman Byron Webster has joined Yeovil after leaving Northampton, who have brought in left-back Joe Widdowson from Rochdale after their recent captures of Chris Hackett and Ishmel Demontagnac from Millwall and Notts County respectively, as the Cobblers look to rebuild following midfielder Michael Jacobs’ departure for Derby.

Rochdale have made a triple swoop for Liverpool youngster Joe Rafferty, Blackburn loan signing Ryan Edwards and Kevin McInytre, formerly at Accrington Stanley, who have added Preston midfielder Luke Clark, Liverpool midfielder Lewis Hatch and defender Toto Nsiala to their squad.

The Minstermen’s Yorkshire rivals Bradford City, meanwhile, have bolstered their ranks further with the arrivals of right-back Stephen Darby, midfielder Garry Thompson and Will Atkinson from Liverpool, Scunthorpe and Plymouth respectively.

Former Bantam Guy Branston has moved on to Aldershot, where he will be joined by midfielder Craig Stanley after his switch from Bristol Rovers, who have reinforced that area of the pitch with Preston’s Seanan Clucas and Oliver Norburn, from Leicester.

But Shots left-back Anthony Straker has left for Southend, who have snapped up striker Gavin Tomlin and defender Ryan Cresswell from Dagenham and Rotherham.

Port Vale have taken advantage of the lifting of their transfer embargo to swoop for Exeter centre-back Richard Duffy, Shrewsbury goalkeeper Chris Neal and Crewe centre-back David Artell, as well as Stevenage pair Jennison Myrie-Williamson and Ashley Vincent and Darren Murphy, from Colchester.

At Exeter, manager Paul Tisdale has lost 16-year-old Sean Goss to Manchester United in a £100,000 deal and defender Troy Archibald-Henville to Swindon but strengthened his midfield with the capture of Arron Davies from Northampton.

Tommy Doherty, Pat Baldwin and Kevin Amankwaah have also joined the Grecians from Bath, Southend and Rochdale respectively.

Devon neighbours Plymouth have made Watford goalkeeper Rene Gilmarton only their second summer signing while Torquay welcomed striker Billy Bodin in a £70,000 deal with Swindon, Arsenal left-back Tom Cruise, Brighton goalkeeper Michael Poke and Dunfermline’s Craig Easton but Mark Ellis has left the Gulls for Crewe.

Barnet have taken on West Ham youngsters Oliver Lee and Jordan Brown, while Cheltenham have recruited Bees midfielder Sam Deering, which will compensate for Luke Summerfield’s move to Shrewsbury.

Other transfers have seen Dagenham left-back Damien McCrory switch to Burton, Sam Togwell swap Scunthorpe for Chesterfield and Wimbledon bring in Warren Cummings from Bournemouth following Sam Hatton’s departure for Grimsby.

Off the pitch, ex-Barnet and Notts County chief Martin Allen has taken over as manager of Gillingham.

Cheltenham have signed a Barnet midfielder? I cant contain my exitement.
The above is not a story, simply cut and pasted from the Transfer section of BBC website and then the vague link to any League 2 teams.
If there's no news, just say!
P.S. Please not Facey, defines the word journeyman. 70 goals in 14 years, not good enough for us.

Top 10 for City next season, no worries. Nothing in that write up above should strike fear in us. No stand-out signings to have us quaking in our boots. Logan (to Wycombe) must be on his last legs for a start!!

I think you are right Daley, and Fleetwood could well win it I reckon.

Okay. Slow news day. How about best ever away day with City, excluding Conference years and Wembley?

Me? 83/84, Aldershot, who were like us flying high with a cracking home record. Long journey. Sunny spring afternoon. 4-1 York, get in! Avoiding squaddies blending into the surrounding "park" intent on GBH. Getting slaughtered in a pub somewhere near Reading that evening. Marvellous.

You?

Now I've posted this, look out for 3 immediate signings

Home to Man Utd in the league cup where we lost 3-1. Seeing Giggsy flying down the wing and Utd trying but failing at the crescent was fantastic. WE won 4-3 over the 2 legs

I was at that Aldershot game in 83/84. Keith Houchins debut. Rob Twinning coming out of the loo nose bleeding. Segragation was being penned in behind the goalwith nowhere to go. The mob of 70 youths waiting in the park afterwards. The copper with his alsation took the lead off it and said get em. Ive still never seen 70 people disappear at the sight of one police alsation. What a day. I cant wait to re visit on September 29th as I now live in Hampshire. Ive had some funny days following city all these years.

Chester away is one i remember from 83/84. Securing promotion then having the Nomads coach windows put through by bricks as we left Chester. Ive still got the scar in my right ear from the flying glass. It was **** cold coming back over the pennines with those missing windows. I was however quite merry after we stopped to celebrate on the way back.

Sunderland away in the League Cup, winning 4-2 in an open end drenched by torrential rain... but did we care? The return leg even better, looking like going out on away goals until Walwyn scored in the final minute of injury time in extra time...

Apart from the obvious ones I will always remember Rotherham away in Spring 1973. We won 2-1 to stay up and it meant Rotherham would go down. Crucial as the next season was a glorious one!!

Was that the one where our player lobbed the Hull goalkeeper from inside the centre circle ? I think his name was Warren Ward, am I right ? I remember hugging a young lady I had never met before (or since) when that went in. Hull were celebrating winning the league and we somewhat pi--ed on their party.

Arsenal away in the FA Cup in the 1970s (I believe) is one I always remember.

Jimmy Seal scored a screamer to equalise, turned in the penalty area and smashed the ball into the top corner - an absolutely glorious goal. We were having a great celebration until some of our coloured cockney friends appeared behind us with very large knives and put a bit of a damper on things!

It certainly was... I think Ward got both? We were up on the barriers celebrating at the end until the Hull fans celebrating on the pitch decided to charge...
