Scott Kerr signs new York City deal

SCOTT KERR’S brilliant season at York City has been rewarded with another 12 months at the club.

Minstermen boss Gary Mills has exercised a clause in the midfielder’s contract which will see him stay at Bootham Crescent for another year – and he hopes the 30-year-old could be back in action as early as September.

Kerr suffered a campaign-ending cruciate ligament injury at Luton Town in the FA Trophy semi-final in March but, up until that point, had been one of the first names on Mills’ team sheet as York eventually claimed both Trophy and play-off glory over the Bedfordshire outfit.

Despite missing out on both Wembley trips, Kerr was rewarded with the Billy Fenton Clubman of the Year award by supporters and was named players’ player of the year as well as Harrogate Minstermen player of the year.

And Mills is delighted to have him signed up once again.

“No one deserves another year more than him,” he said.

“I am just hoping he gets back fit as soon as possible. No one can argue with his commitment and what he gave the team last season and what he gives the club.

“He is a true professional and my type of player. He is someone I love working with. We hope he will be back in September but we are not going to rush him back. If it is October, then it is October.”

Mills, who told The Press on Tuesday that he was targeting Blue Square Bet Premier hot-shot Jon Shaw to add to summer signing Lee Bullock, said there were “a number of things in the pipeline” and was hoping the club would be able to announce something in the “next few days”.

Meanwhile, City have sold about 500 season tickets as the club builds up to life in League Two next season. Supporters have until June 29 to take advantage of discounted early bird offers on prices.

And the Minstermen will play a pre-season friendly at Pickering Town on Wednesday, July 18. The match takes place at the Pikes’ Mill Lane ground and will kick off at 7.30pm.
