Reed relishes his role in York City silverware bid

Jamie Reed Jamie Reed

YORK City striker Jamie Reed has insisted he does not mind being labelled the team’s “super-sub” if the club carries on picking up silverware.

Exactly half of Reed’s 42 outings for the Minstermen in 2011/12 came off the bench with the forward contributing 12 goals in the process.

He also had to settle for cameo roles in the club’s two appearances at Wembley with a 90th-minute run out against Newport in the triumphant FA Trophy final followed by his 78th-minute introduction during the successful Blue Square Bet Premier promotion decider against Luton.

But Reed will forever savour his brief forays on to the hallowed turf and, on his frequent substitute role, added: “I am just doing my job at the end of the day.

“As long as the team are pushing on and winning trophies as we have done then, whether I start, or am on the bench or come on and do my bit, it’s all good. It was amazing to get on the pitch twice at Wembley.

“It’s what every boy dreams about. We all worked hard together to get to that stage so to finish the season like that was brilliant.”

Just as memorable for Reed were the scenes that greeted City’s players, management staff and board members during last Monday’s open-top bus parade, with thousands of supporters lining the streets to show their appreciation and offer congratulations.

The 24-year-old forward said: “I’ve not really experienced anything like that. I got close to it with Bangor when we won the league and the Welsh Cup.

“There was a little parade and fans came along but not as many as we had here. It was amazing. It surprised me when we started to come around the corner and saw everybody packing out St Helen’s Square. It was pretty special.”

Reed, who is contracted at Bootham Crescent until next summer, will now become a Football League player again, having made seven appearances at that level – familiarly all as a sub – during his teenage years with Wrexham.

In between, there have been loan spells with Glentoran, Colwyn Bay, Aberystwyth, Tamworth, Rhyl, Bangor and Australian outfit Dandenong Thunder. But the Chester-born ex-Wales semi-pro international is now pleased a very long and globe-trotting journey has come full circle.

He said: “We can definitely do well at that level. I had a little taste of it at the start of my career but I have had to take two steps backwards to take a step forward. Hopefully, I can keep pushing forward now.”

i hope reedy does get the chance in league 2 though plenty of people seem to think he,ll be on his way,12 goals off the bench plenty of that time out wide where he,s not really at his best dosnt sound too bad to me i think it depends on who else mills can find available strikers arn,t easy or cheap to bring in.

Reedy scores goals. Top goalscorer in L2 was something like 18 goals last season, and Reedy scored 12 mainly from the bench! Not many around with his goals/minutes record.

Great to have him in the squad.

well i think we need him in the squad at any rate even if we need to look for another striker or two he,s got to be a better bet than ashikodi.

I didnt realise that Reedy had another year left on his contract. I was actually wondering if he would be here next season, but I am glad that he will. Although he scored 12 goals he didnt have a great season, he often struggled to do well when he was selected in the starting eleven. A lot was expected from Jamie Reed after his promising start, and he is a real fans favourite. But its now time for him to start showing us what he can do.

When the goals are needed he generally is The Man! give him another year and see how we do in Lge 2. A new striker to replace Ashikode and Blinkhorn next up.

I am also guilty of thinking Reedy was out of contract, the main reason I thought he would be released!
Lets hope he can score goals at this level as well, he hasn't really had a barren spell with us compared to minutes on the field etc. obviously was loving the celebrations at wembley, especially when he climbed on the crossbar!

I think there is more to come from Jamie and that he may well be one of our better performers during the 2012/13 campaign. He has a great deal of physical strength and stamina, appears to be York City through and through and with GM's continued guidance, he should now develop more into the finished article and could target 20 goals for next season.

At 24 I'm not sure there is a vast amount of improvement to see, this isn't a teenager we are talking about. But his impact from the bench is valuable and I for one won't mind him staying another season. Whole hearted honest player too.

His first touch is awful and while I wish him all the best he is not a league two level player I'm afraid.

If we play only one striker it will be Jason Walker. Therefore we are not going to attract a recognised striker who will know his appearances will be limited to the bench and injury replacements; unless it is someone developing from lower leagues. Keep Jamie and find another prospect ; can't see someone like Jon Shaw wanting to play second fiddle to Jason.

Totally agree. We play one down the middle which will be Walker and if Reed is happy to be on the bench for most league games then keep him. We wont find anyone better who is willing to play 2nd fiddle to Walker

Duffy, I'm leaning towards agreeing with you although may be worth keeping as a last quarter sub if we're chasing the game and have resorted to long punts. Jamie's first touch against Bolton was his best -he hasn't hit the same level of control since and often seems to run out of gas. Possibly a move back to Newport or Wrexham would suit as he doesn't fully match our keep ball game. However, to throw in a curved ball - I don't agree that we should rush to offload Blinkhorn. I think he may prove to be a late starter; certainly can head the ball and has the potential to link play. Despite the boo boys Chambers came good - Blinks may be similar. Especially after a full pre-season. Although I admit some think he's blown his chances already.

I would love to see Reedy stay for at least the end of his contract. Knowing he has to secure his contract for the season after could bring him into his own.

I would do anything to see him and Walker in a 442 with Blair and Chambers as wingers Kerr and Mclaughlin in the middle.

The signings we need are purely in strength and depth. Doig must stay however I fear McGurks days could be numbered at this stage. a shadow of his former self and now that little bit older starting to struggle in injuries and recovery.

Fyfield hasnt the skill for league two would be happy to see him go.

More players in their own positions next season though and if Walker is out of the frame and 433 wont work play Reedy and another in 442. Play to the players available strengths and we can do even better than we did last season!

Prediction pre -signings 7th (play offs)

Good to see great attitude from Reed here. He realises his 90 minute performances haven't been up to scratch but like Matty Blair, in a different way, he is a man for the big occasion and gets goals when we need them. This is what football is about, not nitpicking technical analysis on his first touch.
