Malton & Norton Golf Club’s Chris Halley to compete in Brabazon Trophy
10:40am Saturday 26th May 2012 in Sport
IT boasts a roll of honour including former US Masters champion Charl Schwartzel, Ryder Cup players Paul Way, Peter Baker and Peter Hanson and a raft of European Tour winners.
The 27-year-old booked his place in the event, which will be held at the Walton Heath course in Surrey from June 28 to July 1, in the most dramatic fashion, almost holing his second shot on the second hole of a 13-man play-off.
Halley had fired a one-over-par 73 at the northern qualifier, staged at Worksop, one of a baker’s dozen of players to card the same score, and five behind the winning number of 68. It set up a cavalry charge to see who could snap up one of four remaining spots.
“I parred the first play-off hole and made a birdie on the second,” said Halley, who plays off a handicap of plus-two. “My second shot on the second play-off hole lipped out – I nearly holed it – and let’s just say I was left with an easy putt.
“I am happy to get through and my aim is to make the cut and play the weekend. I am really looking forward to playing the course.”
Halley’s achievement is the latest in a successful season which has already seen him win the York Union Thompson trophy, a scratch invitation tournament held at Fulford. He is also hoping to make a run at Open Championship qualifying.
Nick Redman, managing secretary of Malton & Norton GC, said of Halley’s achievement: “Everyone at the club is delighted for him. He is a regular in the Yorkshire teams and his success can only do the club credit.
“Chris has been with us for a few years and we are hoping he will get through to the latter stages.”
• York Golf Club member Stephen Miller won the Peter Langron Cup with 44 stableford points at the annual St Leonard’s Hospice fundraising tournament at Fulford.
