York City goal hero Matty Blair named Blue Square Bet Premier player of the month

Matty Blair Matty Blair

YORK City forward Matty Blair was today named Blue Square Bet Premier player of the month for April and the play-offs.

Blair has been rewarded for an incredible run of goalscoring form as the Minstermen won the FA Trophy and clinched promotion back to the Football League.

Having netted the play-off semi-final winner against Mansfield to send City to Wembley, he struck the first goal in the FA Trophy final and then the winner against Luton Town in the promotion final.

Well deserved and Gary Mills must have been unlucky not to get the Managers award. On a different note Luton have now permanently signed Andre Gray from Hinckley. Roll on the fixture list! Come on City!

Well done Matty, thoroughly deserved. Time to enjoy a well deserved rest but hey only 12 weeks on saturday to first game in League 2. How good does that sound. Bring it on!

Many congratulations to Matty Blair - a real trier and team player, with such pace and developing skills and with GM's guidance, he will surely get better and better - hopefully staying in York City colours for a few years!! Must say a word in support of both Chris Smith and Danny Parslow, who have both been solid as a rock and pillars of our success. COYR.

Well done Matty, its deserved.

Not really sure what else Millsy could have done to scoop it. Two Wembley wins/Trophies not enough??

Perhaps Luella produced some of her old tricks for Cox to get it!! :)

I find it hard to imagine that any level of football other than the Conference would award manager of the month to a losing semi-finalist, whilst ignoring someone who won two Wembley finals in a week.

Congratulations to Matty - well deserved!

Bizarre choice for MOTM if its for "and the play offs".

Thoroughly deserved for Matty, one of the best players we've had in years when you consider some of those who have "graced" the BSP league for us over the past 8 or so years (most of whom I've forgotten when I come to think about it)

My 'City in white shorts' theory earned me enough profit for one of the Wembley trips.

Keeping quiet on that one now though!:)

Worth everything that has been spent on him, and a fantastic role model for up and coming sports personalities at our schools. Never gives up and plays to the final whistle in every match. Well done, Matty.

Also meant to add - he`s also smiling and laughing all the time. On Sunday none stop grinning even when things got difficult for the team.

I would like to say the following statement has very nice ring to it,

NON-LEAGUE LUTON TOWN FC

enough of luton now time to move on and leave them behind as we await the Football League 2 fixtures.

Nah, lets have a couple more days of poking fun at Luton.
Like to see that Shower pitched away at the Triton Community 'Arena' first match of next season or perhaps the formidable 'Ewn Fields'.

How to GM not win manager of the month?!

Because its poxy non-league and I guess Mansfield's WDL statistics are better than ours for the period concerned.

It was also Cox's turn.

Win the Conference Awards which are due out shortly.

Technically I think these awards are for April, when Mansfield's particular brand of football won them quite a few matches. No doubt if they have a Manager of the Month for May there'll be a short list of one. In fact it's hard to see how anyone outside York City could win any awards for May.

Just seen footage from Sunday on You Tube taken from Sky Sports News... my eye was taken by the Blue Square North Table and I checked to see who was going up... I then shook myself and thought "who cares?!" How sweet is life thanks to GM, the board and the whole squad? Thank you one and all!!!

Sadly where would the money come from. As much as I agree regarding the capacity there is no way the city of York council is suddenly going to agree to put 8 million more into the pot. The new ground is going to be far from perfect capacity or location wise, but after 8 years it's now that or nothing with time running out.

Exceelent achievements by one and all at the club this season. Really inspirational and has kept a smile on my face since the final whistle.

Meredith - if he does leave, would we get compensation for him?

New ground - I think from the off we all agreed it may be short on capacity. However, it is being built and it may be good for the club to put together a road map for its expansion... new stand down the flank, fill the corners in etc. Just a thought.

Not if he goes to Hibs - remember a bloke called Clayton Donaldson? I can't believe that we would have the same situation again. I think the compensation rule for 24 year olds only applies in England and that it's 23 everywhere else. Not that Hibs are interested, as far as I know.
Why isn't he signed up already?

Without getting ahead of ourselves and designing a mini Old Trafford, I do agree that the council-tax payers to the COYC, should not be burdened with any additional costs. BUT, the main business collaborators to this scheme, are certainly "blue-chip" companies who could afford some extra financial outlay and this could be the time to press them for assurances over future financial support, over developing the fully finished article. Fans of all clubs involved, must also have the opportunity to comment upon their wishes over how best to proceed with the initial plans and development of the stadium lay-out. eg. The combining of seats and behind goal standing areas.

I would be very suprised if the developers could be persuaded to put more money into the pot at this stage. I do agree that we should have a say on what the actual ground ends up like, standing is out due to the loan so it's important the ground is easily expanded if money becomes available in the future. I'm not as hung up on the capacity as some if it's easy to increase it in the future. I'm more concearned about where it is and getting the transport infrastructure in place.

Agreed. Having seen the plans the ground looks easily expandable. The flank has space for a 2nd main stand and then the corners can be filled in. Personally, I'd like to see a road map for how and when this will be achieved, but this will come in time. The terracing is desired but at present not possible, however, time may change this.

The transport infrastructure is important too. A shuttle bus service from the city centre in conjunction with a local bus firm should be explored. Also, due to a lack of local pubs, this will be a good opportunity to set up a decent sized and equipped supporters club of a decent size.

Just thinking out loud but a Supporters Club joining the main stand and home end called "Bottoms Up" could be quite amusing and a real money maker for the club.

Getting back to Meredith, it seems the club are not entitled to compensation because he's over 24. I'm sure the manager and chairman will have tried to persuade him to stay but presumably he wants to move on.

Meredith almost left last season for a Scottish club I think, then changed his mind late on. If a league one or a Championship team came for him I doubt very much whether we could hold on to him. If I remember correctly he was only on a one year contract anyway, so would now be a free agent.

I work with Clayton's mum, Jenny, and his agent negotiated for him to receive a £40K "golden hello", tax free, in addition to promising all the squad a cut of fees received for advertising and PR work in Edinburgh - City tried really hard to get him to stay, but just couldn't compete. A shame as "he loved it in York but it's only a short career"!
