Thousands turn out for York City victory parade
8:00am Tuesday 22nd May 2012 in Sport
By Jennifer Bell, jennifer.bell@thepress.co.uk
JUBILANT York City players were met with roaring cheers as they paraded through the city to celebrate their historic Wembley double.
City-centre streets became a sea of red, white and blue yesterday evening as thousands celebrated the Minstermen’s stunning triumphs, which have seen them land the first major trophy in the club’s 90-year history and promotion back to the Football League.
Supporters chanted and cheered and basked in the spring sunshine, as City’s players, management, staff and directors took an open-topped bus ride from Bootham Crescent to the Mansion House.
The FA Trophy and play-off trophy were displayed from the bus as it wound its way along Bootham, Blake Street, Davygate, Parliament Street and Coney Street.
Crowds were already packing behind barriers outside the Mansion House in St Helen’s Square at 5pm, more than an hour before the bus was due to arrive and chants of “We Are York!” and “We...are...going up!” rang around the square.
Katherine Chalmers, 28, from Huntington, said: “It’s lucky we got here early because there was no way we’d miss this. It feels like the whole of York is coming out to celebrate.” Nick Spence, 34, from Haxby, said there was a brilliant feeling in the city. He said: “It’s like people are walking on air.”
Matthew White, 30, from New Earswick, said: “You could just feel how happy everyone is. It’s put the pride back in the club.”
Gary Haynes, 39, from Acomb, said: “To see everybody just so happy and proud of what City have done is something really special. It’ll never be forgotten.”
City won promotion with a 2-1 victory over Luton Town at Wembley on Sunday, only eight days after winning the FA Trophy at the same venue, and three days after City of York Council approved plans for a new stadium at Monks Cross.
York City director Sophie Hicks said: “We have brought pride back to York.”
Chairman Jason McGill said: “This had been the culmination of a great eight days. Sunday’s game was the biggest in the club’s 90-year history.”
Council leader James Alexander and MP Julian Sturdy both praised the team for a fantastic season. The parade was City’s first since they were promoted to the old Second Division in 1993.

Probably no greater honour can come to any team than the respect of their supporters.
Today, we honoured a manager who had a great vision. Today, we honoured a team who had the courage to overcome the adversities of the game and see that vision enshrined in the club we all love today.
Today, we, the supporters you have built around you, are proud to honour you for what you have achieved in just 8 days of dedicated, selfless service for it was your vision that inspired them all to greater things.
Vision, integrity, dedication and hard work have been companions on your journey through this season and you have rightly earned the full respect of your supporters and your city.
Respect borne out of a beautiful season played with grace, strength and tenacity. A season that lit the fire of commitment and the warmth of love in our hearts.
For everything you have given us this season and for the seasons to come we offer you thanks.

Seriously - look at the headlines over the past few days, look at the comments, most read, most viewed etc in the Press. This city DOES care about its football club and its not just about the 4000 regulars we will get next season. Not that they are the same 4000 people every game and remember an average needs a much higher figure at one end.
On Sunday I had friends, family, work colleagues glued to their radio listening out for my team - people who are not YCFC fans usually. A few want to sample a match next season, lots of-course are happy just following the results on the radio or in the Press. But like I always stress, the Community stadium is about a lot more than YCFC, but then a lot more than 3000-4000 care about this club.
Thanks to Gary Mills and the players - plus the McGill family for giving York City a team to be proud of once again.

There are a lot of Luton fans who have proven themselves to be vile people with the tirade of abuse JW has received on the internet and at games. He missed a penalty for them in last years play off final so obviously he isn't going to be Mr Popularity. However, they've gone way too far at times and I think JW's "lighthearted" response has been taken way out of context. He didn't make the sign, it was Paddy Mac who instigated the idea of getting the sign from the crowd and Jase looked more than a little embarrassed when holding it.

Jason got all sorts of threats to himself and family from the Luton scum simply for having the misfortune to miss a penalty for them.
He might have been a little misguided to display the sign but I think we can all well understand how he feels about his former "supporters".
And can you imagine the FA doing something about a homemade sign on a bus when they don't blink an eye at thuggery of the worst kind inside grounds - i.e. Kenilworth Road two years ago?
I can understand how you might be a little disappointed with the sign but mountains out of molehills comes to mind.

I've seen the vile abuse that has been directed at JW by some Luton fans; the death threats were among the milder example of the trolls' activities.
In the face of that Jason has been the model of restraint; if he'd put in official complaints, I suspect more than one or two Luton fans could be facing criminal charges instead of sitting behind their computer keyboards pretending to be outraged.
Jason's apologised for the imagined offence. End of the story, get over it.

You may have had a different view if you had witnessed what has happened over the last 2 years or so. I witnessed 4 or 5 Luton thugs kicking a fan in the car park where the York City fans were on Sunday. They kicked the fan to the ground and then spat on him. We were told to leave their social club at the Trophy semi final for being "dirty northern scum!". There is of course the well documented coin chucking incident, and numerous other incidents. I'm sure they have their decent supporters, but the general opinion is that they cannot stand losing and have more than their fair share of yobs. Led by the biggest one of all, Nick "i never saw anything" Owen !

Paddy,Jason or any player had anything to do with this. A bloke behind me was bragging to his so called mates get this up there. when it was thrown towards the bus it nearly took peoples heads off. then a member of the establishment picked it up and passed it up to Paddy. Jason and Paddy held it reading it and then moved it on. The guy with the camera specifically asked Jason if he could take pictures and intensely looking at Jason he said NO. I said to my young lad with me did you see that and he said Jason didnt want to be filmed with it and turned his back to enjoy the rest of the party. Paddy Mclaughlin then threw it on the floor.
Total respect to Jason Walker who we all know has many friends at The team from near St Albans who we beat, and to Paddy for diffusing the situation.

Burtons new stadium was ok from memory. Looking at the attendances for the season we averaged just over 3K which was 5th in the conference with a max of just over 4K I would hope with the feel good factor, improved away support & GMs attractive football style we might improve that by up to 1K.
That looks like just about 10th in LG2 if cash through the gate= league position. Up in the giddy heights of LG1 that's about 18th. From a atmosphere perspective a well filled stadium with potential to expand if the York public decide to support it seems a better option currently.
It will be interesting to see how the current euphoria converts into attendances hence income, like all City fans I hope the City gets behind the team & enjoys the game played well in good spirit.
Well done Fans, directors, players, sponsors and indeed all associated with the club we are back where we belong after all.

as for the new stadium, its perfect for our situation, 6000 seater is about our attendanced, with one side eaily able to upgrade. theres absolutely no room for improvements at BC and with the loan we have to move. i may have liked to us the british sugar site (because i live right next to it!) but to knock that down would have cost £000,000's.
here's looking at league 2 champions next year or maybe yet another trip to wembley!

wanted to say well done to board, the mcgills and gary mills for bringing this club back to were it belongs.

On the new ground, we have no choice but to move. The new plans have plenty of scope for expansion. The only point I think we should really focus on is lobbying the football league to enable terracing.
This is not a decision by York, we are driven by FL rules. Morecombe were not in the league when these rules cam about so were exempt, at the time York were a league team.

Congratulations to York City on what sounds like a thoroughly deserved promotion. Many comments on this thread re: L*t*n fans which are absolutely bang on the money, evidently you've had a few pleasant encounters over the years.
Congratulations to Jason Walker on the headstone stunt as well, absolutely fantastic, really made my day when I heard about that. The man's become an overnight legend in Watford, I take my hat off to him a thousand times over. L-E-G-E-N-D is all I can say really, he deserves all the credit in the world.
Nice one on keeping that shower down where they belong. A clearly offside winning goal is really the maraschino cherry on top of what is already a very sweet dessert! Two wins at Wembley in quick succession, you must be absolutely buzzing. Great to have you back in the football league, I still remember when you turned Man Utd over in the league cup all those years ago.
This thread has really made my day, lovely to see the Shatters being kept well and truly in their place.

I don't think it was Jason's idea, and i'm sure he probably didn't want to be part of it. Nevertheless, it is fairly harmless compared with what Luton have inflicted on us. Coins, substitutes urinating on advertising hoardings, thuggish ex-managers, EDL idiots, nice warm welcomes in their tinpot Bobbers Club. Arsene Wenger sees more than Nick Owen ! Put them in the Bedfordshire Sunday League if they want to be a big club.

Completely false, as the man himself will tell you. He was homesick for the north and hadn't settled down south. Luton Town did the right thing by him and if you cannot admit that then it's pretty sad.

Walker missed the penalty against Wimbledon in the play-off final. He moved to YCFC a few week's later. When did he get this abuse you so high & mightily refer to? The penalty was the last kick of the match. Did we camp in his front garden?
Walker spoke at the time of his homesickness and he spoke about it last week on the BBC. He also spoke of how well Luton treated him and how understanding we were -
"They did a lot for me at Luton but it just didn't go well for me and I was homesick for a number of reasons."

I sponsored Jason's shirt at Luton and I spoke to him a few times. He's a nice lad and I was sorry it didn't work out. When he left he took the shirt with him and didn't give it to me, which I presume means he's attached to it. It cost me 500 GBP but if it means something to him then he's welcome to keep it.
Please, don't post a response if you're going to make stuff up, your posts here are an embarrassment to YCFC and an insult to some good people at Luton Town.

Luton are a disgrace and i hope Nick Owen is deeply ashamed when/if he reads my letter. Having been at every fixture between the clubs (except the abandoned one) in the last three years, i have never seen a club behave in such an unsporting manner on and off the pitch. There have been certain clubs that have left a sour taste in the mouth i.e. Accrington, Crawley, Stevenage and Morecambe, but Luton put them all to shame. York City have been a credit to the Conference and now they are in their rightful place. Now please stick to your own forums and let City fans enjoy their Summer of happiness !

The problem is that we are a cash cow for the BSP, a lot of these clubs have never seen 1,000+ away fans turn up and once Luton are gone they won't be getting these paydays again.
Anyway, it's good to talk to a mature adult and discuss facts and actual events rather than blinkered fantasy. I thought Sunday's match was played in an excellent spirit, even if Luton ended up with the short end of the stick and 2 concussed players!
