Defender of faith Oyebanjo walks the line of rescue

LANRE OYEBANJO turned from goal star to goal-line tsar as York City completed a remarkable Wembley double – but he played down individual acts and instead lauded a huge team effort.

Oyebanjo scored in the Minstermen’s 2-0 FA Trophy triumph over Newport last week and yesterday was involved in big moments at the other end of the pitch as City won back a place in the Football League with their 2-1 win over Luton.

Firstly, his courageous header at the back post denied Luton substitute Craig McAllister a certain goal. Then a similarly brave block kept out JP Kissock’s effort from close range, with the Hatters again looking sure to equalise. Both the Luton men were bloodied in the challenges, with McAllister having to depart following the clash of heads.

“The first one, the ball came in and I knew if he wins it, he’ll score, and I had to put everything into it,” said Oyebanjo, reluctantly admitting it was a “big header”.

“With the other, the ball was going one way but Inghy (goalkeeper Michael Ingham) got a touch and it changed the direction of the ball. I had to step the other way and get my leg in there. I just tried to get in the way of the ball and luckily it stayed out.

“It was a big challenge but the whole team were great. Ash got the goal when we needed it and it settled us down. Obviously getting another goal straight after half-time was great.

“It’s been a long hard season and to finish it like this is unbelievable. The whole squad have been used so well. It really has been a team effort.”

Promotion means Oyebanjo will become a Football League player for the first time. Not a bad turnaround for a player whose previous club, Histon, were relegated from the Blue Square Bet Premier a year ago prior to his switch to Bootham Crescent.

“I’ve played four seasons in the Conference and to finally say you’re a League player – it’s truly beautiful,” said the 22-year-old, who switched from centre-midfield to his old right-back berth yesterday following a first-half injury to Jon Challinor.

“We’ve won twice at Wembley in eight days. This one was the big carrot and the one we wanted. Those drinks by the pool over the summer will taste so much better.”

Oyebanjo was also delighted for the City faithful that they will be back watching League football next term.

“There were always going to be more Luton fans than York but the York fans were very loud and we could hear them,” he said.

“I’m happy to do it for them. They’ve travelled a long way and spent a lot of money to get behind us. I hope they’ve enjoyed it.”

IMO Banjo was the MOM. Lets hope we can keep the class players and get rid of the dross. Unfortunately there is no loyalty in football and some of those squad players played there last game for city yesterday. The club must move on under GM.

for me, Ingham, Oyebanjo, Smith, Meredith, McGurk, Blair, Chambers, Moke, Kerr, McLaughlin & Walker are the definates to stay on next season.
possibly Doig, Parslow, Challinor and Fyfield. however i think we may have seen the last of Brown, Reed, Blinkhorn, Potts, Ashikodi etc.

rogue - Potts must stay! tonnes of potential and has played well every time he has been asked.... as must Doig ("neutral" fans with us yesterday were amazed at his quality) I think a bit of credit too for Scott Brown - he has taken a fair bit of stick in his time at York but he played an hour yesterday in centre mid having barely kicked a ball for months and did not let us down in what will almost certainly be his last game for the club. Agree with you on Blinkhorn, Ashikodi and - with a heavy heavy heart - Reedy.

A brilliant performance from Banjo and one he can be truely proud of... no-one can take away his two brilliant performances at the home of football.

Whoever is retained and whoever is released, they have all contributed to this clubs success and will forever be remembered for that.

Enjoy your (few) beers by the pool Banjo, you've earnt them.

COYR. Job. Done.

its gonna be hard for any of the guys who were part of in particular the incredible climax of the season to be out but its true sentiment cannot come in to play cant wait to see who millsy might manage to bring in for next season.how about a cheeky bit for Andre Gray from a certian conference club of our aquaintance. And can anybody tell me on what basis Bopp was signed?.Firstly tho before debating who stays and who go,s let all the squad that played a part enjoy it eh.

Andre Gray would be a great addition, also Jamille Matt. Ben Gibson would also be a great signing if he is prepared to accept an offer. I think it will be bye bye to Bopp, Blinkhorn,Tonne, Ashikodi, Brown and possibly Reedy who would command a fee.

Well done to all the players who've all played a part in our success. Mostly agree with Rogue's retained list but would certainly keep his 4 possibles. Whatever, will have faith in Gary Mills' decisions. He's proved that the most important signing at any club is getting the right manager. Fantastic day yesterday and especially sweet for us hard core 2-2.5 thousand supporters who have stayed loyal week in week out during the hard Conference years.
