Promotion would be simply the best for York City manager Gary Mills

York City manager Gary Mills signals what would be better than his European Cup win with Nottingham Forest York City manager Gary Mills signals what would be better than his European Cup win with Nottingham Forest

STEERING York City into the Football League means “everything” to manager Gary Mills, but the Minstermen chief says tomorrow’s Blue Square Bet Premier play-off final at Wembley must be approached as just another game.

“It’s why I am in the game – the beautiful game that I love and adore,” said European Cup winner Mills when asked what victory over Luton Town, and promotion to League Two, would represent to him.

“It’s my life. It is why I am in this job. It’s a fantastic football club with fantastic people in a fantastic city and they deserve to be in the Football League.

“It will certainly be the proudest moment of my footballing career – including my playing career (he was the youngest winner of the European Cup as a player with Nottingham Forest in 1980) – to get this football club into the Football League. Without doubt.

“You can’t put into words, you can’t underestimate the hard work that is put in – mentally and physically – to go and achieve what would be promotion.

“I know what it means to this football club, going from non-league into the Football League. You just have to say that, from non-league into a Football League side again. It is a great opportunity and one that I want to take as a manager.

“I know that it would mean the absolute world to everyone connected with this football club.

“I have got to approach it, and people will ask what I am talking about, but it is just another game. It’s a game of football.”

Mills said the togetherness of the squad, and the big matches they had already come through successfully this season, would only give them confidence ahead of tomorrow’s match against the Hatters. And he has backed his men to come out on top again.

“It is all the hard work we have put in, all the effort, all the off-the-field stuff that people don’t see,” Mills added.

“It’s the spirit we have got. We have become a family together.

“We work for each other, we trust each other and we give each other everything we have got.

“To come down to the last game, knowing we have to do it again, is something we have got to do and something we will go and do.

“That togetherness is very important. That’s why we like to go down a couple of days before – no distractions. Everything we do is together, right to the very last whistle, and we continue to work as a team.

“We’ve pulled together and let’s not underestimate what that means when going to win a football match.”

And Mills is not expecting his players to be nervous, despite what the Wembley match means to the club both in terms of prestige and finance.

“We have had a lot of big games this season,” he explained.

“This is probably the biggest of the lot but we’ve had a lot of big games and, in those, I don’t believe nerves have played a part.

“Look how tough the games were against Mansfield, I didn’t see any nerves. I saw a lot of grit, desire and determination and spirit to win those games.

“The two-legged Trophy semi-final was the same against Luton. Not once have we looked nervous or afraid to go and play. We go and express ourselves.”

Simply the best manager city have had for years. All those muppets that supported Foyle should be embarrassed at the difference this man has made to this football club. Lets just hope we win tomorrow otherwise we might not be able to hold onto him.

So you did not support Martin Foyle then?

Your comment is a little harsh to say the least on our ex manager.

I supported Foyle right to the end - even thought his exit was premature. That said, I'm happy to have been proven wrong by Mills, who is without doubt the best manager I've seen at City.

Best Manager , best players for ages have made major contributions to a great season so far. With the Trophy win and stadium approval play off win would be the icing on the cake. Luton may have 28000 fans with us having 7000 but each team only has 11 players on the pitch where it really matters. They will fear us because they are well aware what we are capable of .Come on City-the REAL supporters will be there again(At 28000 some of Luton's so called support will see their team for the first time!)

I supported Foyle who was more successful than McEwan who I also supported. I feel no embarassment whatsoever. My feeling is one of pleasure and gratitude that our current manager is more successful still.
I don't see the need to attack fellow supporters or to bring a negative tone to proceedings. We should just concentrate on positive support ahead and during a "massive" game.
Regarding muppets are you trying to be Statler or Waldorf?

Siege mentality from players and fans to tomorrow away from home against a big crowd is what we've thrived on all season. Going into the lions den and coming away victorious is what we've done at Wrexham, Mansfield and Luton twice this season. Gary Mills has installed an invincible spirit in his players and we need to back them all the way tomorrow.

Yep it's luton fans telling us how good they are.................
. Anyone else think they are scared of playing us?

I believe our small but dedicated following will be appreciated by our team and our away performances this season have been a strength combined with last weeks confidence boosting exercise make City continue to be Luton,s bogey side. No reason we cannot walk away victors tomorrow, either way the players have done us proud this season playing some very good stuff along the way. So Cmon City one more time for GM yourselves & the fans of football throughout the Conference lets win this!!!

The fact is, that, had Martin Foyle been anywhere near the manager that Gary Mills is the team would have gone into both those finals believing they could win. Instead we had Mr Negativity and Mr Caution and so never had a chance of winning either game. Tomorrow is so different it's not true. We
have a manager, a SQUAD and supporters who believe we can beat anybody and they are RIGHT. Tomorrow is our day COME ON CITY

In SW London, preparing for the bid one! Can't agree, redbluelion, Foyle was a reasonable manager and a thoroughly decent man; his problem was that he was tactically naive and was unable to respond to adversity and change things mid way through a game. Mills is much more astute and aware and, even though his tactics and selctions may have baffled us all at times, the results really do speak for themselves (even including the defeats when his tacits/selections haven't paid off). What I like about MIlls is the way in which he focusses on City's strengths and doesn't talk too much about the opposition - I know some people think he comes across as arrogant but he'll do for me. Dennis Smith has to be the best manager we've ever had - his team always looked as though they could move up another gear, even when they were thrashing sides. I'm old enough to remember how Tom JOhnson worked mircales with b*gger all resources to get us into Div 2 and, if Duffy's reading this, we even struggled to get decent gates during our brief period in that league - the big (12,000+ gates) always relied on a large away support; the people of York and its district have never really got behind the team. Right, I'm off out with two Fulham fans (both coming with me tomorrow) to create mayhem in Balham! COYR
