Selby Warriors celebrate winning the Selby & District Amateur Rugby League Cup
Selby Warriors retained the Selby & District Amateur Rugby League Cup with a 54-16 win over Brotherton at Big Fellas Stadium in Featherstone.
The Warriors inflicted a second successive final defeat on Brotherton to lift the Andrew Wells Memorial Trophy.
Brotherton took a 6-0 lead after putting pressure on the Selby defence in the early stages, but the Warriors hit back with a try by captain Wayne Fennell. Centre Gavin Lightowler added the extras to level the scores.
Lightowler broke through for a try and Fennell also touched down for Lightowler to convert to put Selby in control at 16-6.
Hooker Paul Greenwood capped a hard-working display with a try, with Lightowler converting for a 22-6 half-time lead. Second-half tries were added by second-rower Kyle Jarrett, winger Paddy O’Neil, Fennell (2), Lightowler and full-back Ben Harris. Lightowler converted two and prop Craig Askham kicked one goal.
Stand-off Ben Pearson was man of the match.
The P&S Welding and Engineering Plate final saw Wetherby Bulldogs beat North Yorkshire Stallions 40-14 on the same day.
