THERE were mixed fortunes for the division one newcomers in the Tyke Petroleum Men’s Tennis League.

Poppleton 2 found Fulford in fine form as Sean Evans and Richard Parker won three points and a huge 30 games.

However, fellow promoted side Rowntree Park stunned York with a 9-3 points win, with Ian McAulay and debutant James Denmark nailing all three of their rubbers to win 28 games.

Relegated Wigginton easily saw off Castlegarth in division two, winning seven rubbers as Ian Tooms debuted for the men’s team. However, title favourites Wiggy were rocked by Boston Spa, who battled to a draw in rubbers but snatched the team bonus for a superb away win.

In division three, Boston Spa 2’s Jamie Dewar and Trevor Hughes won all three against newly-promoted Wilberfoss in a 5-4 rubbers win.

However, a final 11-1 win by ’Foss brothers Matt and Dan Poole stole the team bonus and a 7-5 away points win. In division four, Bishopthorpe were thrashed 11-1 by Wigginton 2, while Starbeck 2 beat Fulford 2 8-4, and Copmanthorpe 2 beat Cawood 8½-3½.

In division six, York 4 provided the performance of the day, winning all nine rubbers at home to Sheriff Hutton for a 12-0 victory.
