York City boss Gary Mills aims for Wembley double after FA Trophy win

YORK City boss Gary Mills said it was important his players and the fans enjoyed their Wembley triumph today before turning minds to next week's return to the national stadium.

City beat Newport County 2-0 to lift the FA Trophy, the club's first cup since the 1993 Division Four play-off triumph.

They are back at Wembley next Sunday for the Blue Square Bet Premier play-off final - which is thought to be the more important of the two games as the club look to return to the Football League.

Said Mills of today: "I hope it's the start of new things to come. It's a fantastic club and a fantastic city, with lovely, lovely people.

"We've worked hard to achieve what we want to achieve. The ultimate aim is to get out of this league, but we will talk about the trophy today. It feels great, it's wonderful, and I'm pleased for everybody."

Mills was also delighted for the fans that it was third time lucky under the Arch, after defeat in the 2009 FA Trophy final and 2010 play-off final

"I've witnessed as a player winning and losing and York supporters have witnessed losing twice at Wembley, so it's even sweeter for them that we've won the game and won the trophy.

"They will go home smiling. They deserve it. The players deserve it - they've worked so hard for me this season.

"We want to win the double at Wembley - we have to finish it off next week."

Don't miss the full match reaction from Gary Mills and the players in The Press on Monday.

Thanks for a great day out City!
Nice to get some silverware for that trophy cabinet & payback for the two prior visits. Newport fans were very gracious in defeat no trouble, bitter words a credit to the conference. I am sure we all wish them well surely a top team in the conference soon.
The lads did what they had to do though they merely matched the opposition in the first half allowing one solid gold chance.
It was a good dress rehearsal for the big prize next week GM will draw a line under this & prepare the team to come out firing on all cylinders.
We will not have to play Luton again after next week, just hope its our year long last they are the ones with a bogey team to play so Cmon City!!!

Good manager, good players - playing football the right way. Just need to clinch the big one next week and then I'd say yes, just about the most amazing season of my 35yrs following YCFC. Thanks GM and the team.

I agree. Great day out yesterday but why do we play so badly in the first half of so many games? Other teams would have put us to bed yesterday but what a transformation the second half was! I'd swap yesterdays result for a win next week though!!

Had some good banter with some Newport fans yesterday and hope the same can be said for those going next week. A lot of their fans also stayed longer than most others would have so best of luck to them for next year. No offence, but I hope we don't have to play you guys next year ;-).

Only 1 game left of the season but the MOST important one, so please let's hope the team has saved its best for last!!!

22233 tickets sold by Luton as of yesterday according to their website!

Doesnt matter how many they sell, we'll just have to sing louder. Lets get people to go that wouldnt normally go. Lets go down there there and out sing, out shout ,
out play and out score Luton.

Next week will be another severe test for City, but they have always been up to the task before, so why not again.

Was good to see all city supporters on lower tier together rather than being spread around the stadium like on previous visits. Will make for a good atmosphere if same on Sunday

Newport state they took 11,500 or so to Wembley but didn't look like it inside the ground. Seemed to be far more from York. Unless a few thousand Welshmen stayed in the pubs oustide the ground......

Just heard about the planning people bottling a recommendation - COYC are really pretty hopeless anre't they, they are always afraid to make a decision, no wonder the City keeps getting held back - hope any potential bad news doesn't demoralise the team; why couldn't they have deferred this meeting until AFTER the PO final?

Echo this comment. Superb day and a great win. Strange to see not so many Newport fans behind the goal, they were more to the sides, gave us the edge on vocal support. Now lets do it again next Sunday
