ENTRIES are now being taken for the rejuvenated York Municipal Tennis Tournament.
The competition is making a comeback in the tennis calendar this year, with men’s and women’s singles and doubles, plus mixed doubles, matches taking centre stage in Rowntree Park between Monday, June 11 and Sunday, June 17.
Players must be a member of a club that competes in the IT Sports York Mixed Doubles Tennis League, or must live within the City Of York Council boundary.
The entry fee is £5 per event and entry forms are available from all local tennis clubs, IT Sports at Clifton Moor, or by emailing yorkmunicipaltennis@ gmail.com
The closing date for entries is Sunday, May 20, and organiser Phil Langley appealed for players to help him make the tournament’s return a success.
“York has the biggest tennis league in England and I feel it deserves to have a flagship tournament,” he said. “In the later years, the tournament was perceived as only for the best players. This shouldn’t be the case.
“I first entered the tournament at the age of 14, as I wanted to challenge myself against the best. I eventually went on to win the men’s singles about eight years ago.
“This tournament should be a celebration of tennis in York and I want players of all abilities and ages to enter and support the tournament, making it successful again.
“I would like to thank local league organisers for not scheduling matches during the week of the tournament.
“I am still looking for volunteers to help with the organising and running of the tournament, and anyone interested is asked to get in touch.”
Langley can be contacted by emailing email yorkmunicipal tennis@gmail.com or by phoning 07787 989299.
