REIGNING division one champions Dunnington lost to York in the opening game of the Fulford Ladies Invitation Tennis League.
York won a close match with Louise Lister and Wendy Stirke top-scoring with 26 games, while Nicola Mooney and Nicola Loten led the Dunnington effort with 25 games. Bishopthorpe beat Poppleton 74-34 after a good all-round team performance with each pair scoring 24 or 25 games. Castlegarth beat newly- promoted Pocklington 60-48, but could not get the better of Helen Whilesmith and Liz Jones, who chalked up three 7-5 wins.
In division two, Knaresborough were edged out by Boston Spa.
Alex Sijpestein and Miaja Moulton were Knaresborough’s top scorers with 23 games, while Lorraine Pearey and Lesley Bowling won 24 for Boston Spa.
York 2 were far too strong for Appleton Roebuck, Christine Place and Siobhan Gilfillan leading the way with 28 games in an 81-27 victory.
Starbeck beat Riccall in a battle of the division three newcomers.
Christine Nodding and Lynne Carne only dropped four games, finishing as the highest scorers in all six divisions with 32 games.
Young Wistow sisters Rachel and Sarah Huggins won 19 hard-fought games to help their side to a 61-47 win against Copmanthorpe. Poppleton beat Heworth 66-42 with Rosie Cantrell and Hilary Spencer, and Fiona Smith and Judith Evans, winning all three of their rubbers.
In division four, Cliffe beat Fulford 3 68-40 as Jane Pemberton and Sue Smith had three good wins to collect 29 games. Pocklington beat Bubwith 73-35 thanks to an unbeaten effort from Rachel Bloom and Helen Marsden, winning 28 games. Tollerton’s Sandra Jennings and Ed Hope won 27 games and were well supported by Tina Gallon and Suzi Scottrix with 22 games in a 66-42 win at Copmanthorpe.
Sheriff Hutton edged past Rufforth in division five 55-53, while Poppleton beat Bishopthorpe 60-48.
New Earswick enjoyed a 59-49 win against Wilberfoss in division six. Top scorers were Ann Walker and Jean McDonald with 23 games. Stamford Bridge won 63-45 at Dunnington after Angela Robinson and Karen Anderson top-scored by winning 25 games. Appleton Roebuck saw visitors Copmanthorpe pinch victory in the last round. Newcomers Wigginton lost 64-44 to Bishopthorpe. Katie Harvey and Alison Hallidie Smith collected 25 games for the victors.
