UNBEATEN Old Malton St Mary’s finally saw off ten-man Dunnington 6-3 after extra time in a thrilling York FA Saturday Senior Cup final at Tockwith.

Dunnington had Stu Lee sent off on 15 minutes and were 1-0 down at half-time against an Old Malton side crowned York Minster Engineering Football League premier division champions the previous week.

The ten men stormed into a shock 3-1 lead after the break – only to be pegged back by an own goal and a late leveller, before running out of steam in extra time.

Old Malton started the stronger of the two sides, with Dean Nuttall missing a great early chance.

However, they were thankful to Dan Fogg for heading the ball off his own line with the goalkeeper beaten.

The drama started on 15 minutes when Lee was dismissed by referee Ben Ballantyne for bringing down Rob Baker, who was clean through on goal.

Former York City junior Jonny Andrews was outstanding in Dunnington’s rearguard action from that point on, but Old Malton took the lead a minute before the break when striker John Newton netted after a cross from the left.

Dunnington were given a foothold in the game when Saints conceded a 50th-minute penalty, which Tom Richards converted.

The goal galvanised the ten men, and they took the lead through Jimmy Willmoth’s close-range effort. With 15 minutes remaining, Richards cracked in a third goal and a shock result was on the cards.

However, Josh Tattersall deflected the ball into his own net as Old Malton pulled back to 3-2 and, with time running out, captain Richard Dunning levelled with a long-range shot that went in off a post.

Extra time was all Old Malton, as Dunning’s cross was headed in by Neil Wilford and Nuttall added two more goals to make it a flattering 6-3 scoreline.
