Wembley way salute to Arthur Bottom

ARTHUR BOTTOM’S coffin will be adorned with two York City scarves and a 2012 Wembley shirt.

Club chairman Jason McGill personally delivered the items to a friend of the Bottom family ahead of his funeral. The City goalscoring legend died last week aged 82.

McGill’s gesture followed a request by the family for a scarf, after one of Bottom’s former City team-mates, Norman Wilkinson, was buried with one draped on his coffin following his death last year.

Bottom’s special City shirt will also bear his name and number eight on the back.

The details of his funeral have not been made public at the family’s request.

I seem to remember, about two or three years ago now, reading a Mail on Sunday newspaper article, by the York-born politician Vince Cable and where he was discussing some political/social developments and remembering his own childhood and stated that his boyhood hero was Arthur Bottom, who he used to watch playing for City in the 1950s. He seemed to speak with genuine, dewy-eyed affection for Arthur and the article carried Arthur's name in the headline! Would be nice if he took a bit of time off from running the country to write a nice letter to Arthur's family and to recall those days. Well done to Jason McGill and the City Board/team management, for their gesture on behalf of the club and fans.

Perhaps a standing ovation on 82 minutes at home game against FGR would be appropriate?

How about raising some money and building a statue in his memory outside the ground new or old??

Well done to the club for donating the shirt and scarf to Arthur. Many of us oldies will never forget Arthur Bottom. As well as banging in the goals for York City in the fifties. He still travelled to the ground on the bus with the supporters. Not forgetting that his other job was as a milk-man, delivering milk. A bit different from the lifestyle of todays over-rated "superstars".
