York City sunk by Gateshead in Blue Square Bet Premier

YORK City missed the chance to strengthen their grip on a Blue Square Bet Premier play-off place as they lost 2-1 to Gateshead.

Micky Cummins lashed in a second-minute opener for the visitors at Bootham Crescent and the midfielder doubled his side's tally with a header on 57 minutes.

A treble substitution from the Minstermen paid immediate dividends as Jamie Reed bundled the ball in on 65 minutes.

However, fourth-placed City were unable to fashion an equaliser in frantic finale to the game.

Grimsby, Kidderminster and Gateshead are all now only three points behind the Minstermen.

Saw the match on Premier Sports.
I don't agree with some of the negative comments about how you played;especially entertaining first half when you did create good chances.Ill discipline crept in however during the last 20 minutes which doesn't auger well for the team coherence.
Anyway see you at Blundell Park on Saturday for some welcoming Northern Lincolnshire hospitality.
6000 vocal fans expected.

A very disappointing result for us tonight. But no excuses because Gateshead deserved to win, they were a better all round team than City were. The Gateshead centre backs Curtis and Clark had our forwards in their pockets. Gatesheads pace makes them look like a team which could force its way into one of the play-off positions, possibly at our expense. A big test ahead for City now, how will we respond to this defeat?

I hope Scott Brown doesn't put a York shirt on again. He is overweight and after he came off and was sat in the dugout, me and my son noticed he was falling asleep! Jason Walker seems to be short of match fitness. Why can't we take corners properly? Why start tinkering with a decent team? Did Ben Swallow get a touch? Whats Medredith done wrong? Whats Fyfield done wrong? It's only the 4th time if been this season and its the worst if seen us play, the only brightspots where Paddy McLuaghlin, Scott Kerr and Jon Challinor. Play-off spot the best I can wish for this season.

Lots of disappointed some angry even, unwarranted for the most part we were a long way from being crap or Walker a bad player.
What we had was our show pony players on the pitch who pass the ball well generally have a good touch but do not penetrate the opposition defence or run at it with the ball at feet, yes the players run across the defence looking to play in killer passes but Gateshead were rather good at soaking up that sort of pressure.
Looking at the BBC stats we won a load of corners plus set pieces and got very little return that's because GM does not sign the good in the air player he likes good with feet players so what is the point of all these predictable far post crosses the Heed can soak up that all night & did more variety required or sign players that can meet crosses effectively.
Our triple substitution brought on the more direct Reedy Blinks & Swallow who could not really compete physically for 50 50 balls 7 got very few early to run at them. Walker looked a bit sharper but took up pitch time that may well have been better assigned elsewhere, Brown a too similar player to Kerr offered little threat or variation.
That poor first goal conceded cost the game we always looked like having a goal in us as the Heed were very decent especially at the back no complaints about the second well worked.
We had one of the best pairings at the back at one time we have probably the best left back in the conference given what Mez offers going forward if not in the air & Challinor is doing decent work at right back. It will not return to that standard having moved forward with a more attack minded midfield. However Smith is often poor though ok generally tonight, I like the look of Gibson, Doig seems decent too with Parslow & TY we should be soid at the back. If we are not scoring 2 or 3 goals per game we must tighten up.
We are still in with a great chance if GM can refine the squad into an attacking force with a hard to beat back four but I am unsure he knows his best squad & is giving his new signings opportunities to impress.
Cm-on City need to get the balance right.

Brown falling asleep? How come? He didn't exert himself on the pitch. He has been absolutely abysmal in every City match he has played and Fleetwood must be amazed they could offload such a dreaful player on to one of their promotion rivals

Mills, meanwhile, is becoming far too arrogant. Why start with the same 11 who played so badly against Stockport? Was it just to stick two fingers up at his critics?

And why doesn't he play 4-4-2? His stubbornness wil be his downfall.

Bert Brennan,
It has to be said that Jason Walker, Ashley Chambers and Scott Brown were all unimpressive on Saturday. One as to ponder why any of them played from the start tonight. Jason Walker has lost his sparkle, Chambers has in recent games appeared to drift in and out of the play with little or no determination to be involved, Brown since his arrival has been pedantic and contributed little positive football. Their replacements in both the last two games have demonstrated passion, effort and skill. Come on Gary play those who are showing their hunger to play for York City.

I have the utmost faith in Mills and still believe he will take us up.I did however express some concern a week or so back at the possible disruptive effect of so many new faces since the turn of the year and believe this is a factor in our current stuttering form.Despite such as Duffys' calls for new centre backs I would suggest that Gibson and Doig have added little - we now have an old fashioned lumbering centre back but at the expense of the good build up play from the back which Fyfield brought and amazingly Mills has chosen not to pick in my opinion the best left back in the Conference.Gibson is obviously talented but is not a natural left back and we are really missing Merediths attacking play - I suspect the deal with Middlesbrough is Gibson has to play? Some will not agree but why did we sell Boucaud? - at his best so much flowed through him and he brought the best out of Paddy Mac and Kerr.Brown is so far a poor substitute. Tonne was not even on the bench today and from what I have seen of Swallow , Moke and Pilkington can feel badly done by to be discarded. To compound matters certain players are either out of form or seeking match fitness (eg Walker, Challinor, Blair, Chambers) . The biggest challenge yet for Mills and partly self inflicted but I retain the faith.

Its a constantly evolving living thing a team perhaps we have made one or two changes too many, what you cannot say is that GM has too few options he has been backed by the board taken on one or two players that have not worked out & got a couple of forgotten souls to keep happy thinking of Potts & Moke there. We just need to hit the sweet spot & get the team really ticking plus a bit of luck as we have seen a couple of rivals drop points recently still in our own hands though.

Mills must be the only one who fails to see that for so long now we have been left chasing games with his favoured 433.
We have been salvaging mere solitary points far too often by reverting to 442 which has proven us to play more determined and creative.
It's about time he realised we need to take the game to the opposition with 442 so they are chasing rather than us.
Every one can see Walker is not on form since his return, he has to remember he lost his place initially witha stupid red card. Get him on the bench as a possible impact player and give Reed and Blinks the start they deserve in 442 with Blair and Chambers in their more suited positions causing damage.

We need to pick up the pace in games instead of short slow passing, go more direct down the flanks get the balls in for reed and blinks. Then we will start scoring hat fulls again!

Come on Mills start seeing the basics that everyone else can see, you are throwing the points away with your selection or lack of rather.

We were better off before any of the new signings from Ashikodi onwards, as the squad has got bigger Mills seems to have got more confused as to who his starting 11 should be. I would have signed another centre half and left it at that. Walker looks to either still have a problem or has lost confidence, Chambers has yet again gone backwards as he did last season. Boucade has been replaced with a midfielder in Brown that should never play for us again if we are serious about a top five. The football has all but disappeared since Christmas and Mills has to work out quickly which 11 he wants and stop this constant chopping and changing.

Generally agree with these comments - I suspect the size of the squad is now fostering some disharmony - players like Oyebanjo, Moke, Potts, Pilkington seem totally forgotten and why on earth is Meredith dropped....??? The strange thing is earlier in the season Mills made such a big thing of having a small squad and not having players sitting in the stands.

It appeared from viewing the game on TV that the visitors wanted the ball more than York City and they seemed to know how to take their chances. The striker Walker who has been so prolific in his goal scoring seems to have lost his edge following his long injury lay off. Two more home games to come in the leagues which if won will make this result seem a long way off

Here's some food for thought from a supporter who hasn't been since October due to work and family commitments:

1. It doesn't matter who plays in defence, if that defence is asleep you will always conceded silly goals - something City have done for years and MUST be eradicated. Games are 90-odd minutes long from whistle to whistle - players MUST be reminded of this BEFORE the first whistle and at half time
2. As many others have said, Mills seems to have forgotten the players he brought in during the summer and got more players in of similar ability, leaving the poor sods who did perfectly well and got us some valuable wins in limbo
3. As a result of point 2 Mills no longer seems to know his best 11 and tinkers far too much
4. Agree with everything re: Scott Brown, he's too similar to Kerr but nowhere near as good, we need someone like Moke in there to attack from midfield. Poking and prodding balls through doesn't work against decent sides like Gateshead etc
5. I still think it's a year too early for this team, a lot of them are very young and naive and at times have played as so, example being Fyfield (who has great potential)

My greatest hope is for a Trophy final at Wembley but in all honesty I can't see us winning at Grimsby who are the divison's form team, and who may well knock us out and eventually steal our play-off place

The midfield needs to help the defence at times too. The amount of goals coming straight down the middle this season has been ridiculous.
Kerr was at fault for the first last night, not covering which led to the corner and then leaving his man at the corner who used the time and space to slam it home.
Walker is possibly struggling for match fitness following injury. He looked reasonable last night without having a major impact. The biggest worry I have is that Walker can't play in a front two, which means we have to play a certain way with him in the side.
Gibson on a different level. Lets get Meredith back in and Gibson to CB. Chris Smith out for me, been poor too often this season (did hit a nice shot last night mind).
Would love 442 in the right games, maybe use Blinkhorn and Reed. Reed isn't everyones cup of tea but scores goals when he is on the pitch. His free kick last night was good too.
We didn't utilise all the corners we had last night and too many crosses from them and open play didn't get past the big centre back pairing of the Heed.
Mills seemed to be saying we were the better team in his post match radio interview. I sincerely hope he was putting on a front to not dent confidence as we were second best for alot of last night and didn't create clear cut opportunities. Possession and Corners doesn't amount to being the better team.
I really hope we show some flexibility in the remainder of the season when the game suits. Now he has a big squad he should use it. From what I understand for those who asked, Fyfield is injured, rumours are that Meredith is but I've heard he was dropped from a source at the club. Would seem odd though.

Agree totally with City4Ever. The defence has to be shored up and quick. Two bad goals to give away, Cummins virtually unchallenged for both - a case of "Shaw watching" ? We still have the players to get into the play-offs, but the pack is gathering behind us, all the way down to Cambridge, who we still have to visit. A thought - I have seen City five times this season and have yet to see them win - should I stay away for the remainder of the season ?? C'mon City.

On Saturday we were very obviously a good side playing badly but last night where we playing at the only level we'll reach until the end of the season? If so we can forget the play-offs, never mind Wembley! In agreement with the majority of the posters, however, I'd like to ask the following...what on earth does Swallow add and why is a centre back from Middlesbrough playing left back when we have the best left back in the league? IMO Brown is no where near as bad as people make out... it took him time to settle last night but he did make himself available more than most which for me is why we have struggled of late... our work rate off the ball and without the ball has dipped. I'll bet we win on Saturday meaning moving two tricky away league fixtures to more awkward midweek dates as well... Grrrrrr.... Not happy.

I don't understand the number of changes made to the team. Fine Diog looks good but why take out Meredith?! Also what the hell does Reed have to do!! I thought he played the wrong formation too. 4-4-2 would suit us far more. Walker will never be a lone striker.

Gary mills needs to wake up and practice what he preaches, he says that players are picked on how they are performing, then why start with same eleven as Saturday, everybody I spoke to on Wednesday night at match was in agreement, should have started Reed and Blinkhorn, it was only when they came on that we scored. The reason GM started Walker is because he cannot be seen by the directors to sit £60,000 on the bench after pressing so hard for them to buy him, even though he is not playing as he can. Jamie Reed as far as I am aware cost nothing or very little, but has scored 9 or ten goals on very little match time, if played regular he would have delivered many more, remember last part of last season, Reed 9 goals in 12 appearances of which some were off the bench.

last night was indeed coming there has been plenty of warning bells as far back as Boxing day at mansfield and the embarissment of the darlington miss fits and boys., Tell me one thing Mr MILLS,. why select the same starting 11 last night that clearly struggled for so long against the whipping boys of stockport against a playoff rival. Dont let your stubborn and pig headedness cloud your judgement Gary. The Very poor Scott Brown out to start with, Jason walker while quality when on form (hes grossly out of form) as we can not carry players at this point of the season so walker out reed in. He may make himself available for the ball, getting in everyone's way when he does so, but it is what he does with the ball when he gets it that is so lamentable. I cannot believe the chap on loan from Sheffield Utd can be worse than Brown.

Agree with this. Mr Mills, like most football managers, has arrogance and stubborness in generous helpings. Unfortunately, he's acted against his own stated plan which was to keep a small quality squad where everyone had a chance to be involved. He's brought in far too many players in January and the squad is now big on quantity without adding much quality and what's it done to squad morale? He's added a couple of big centre backs as a number of supporters on here wanted and has it made the defence stronger? er doesn't look like it, looks more pedestrian to me and decent centre backs would have stopped the second goal - free header from 6 yards, what was going on? He's swapped Boucoud for Brown, doesn't look like a great move, Swallow in and Moke nowhere to be seen (another error) and Potts never given a chance. Fyfield and Parslow marginalised. Oh dear. And what was the point of getting Ashikodi in? And starting with the same starting line up from Saturday was a mistake. Walker's not right so let's start with Reedy and Blinkhorn in a 442 and get Meredith back. I'd stick Challinor in midfield with Kerr and Paddy, move Gibson to centre half and use Dan Parslow at right back. We can still go up but we have to use the right players.

Why are we intent on only playing 4-4-2 when we're already losing? Haven't seen us play well for a long time now! Can't believe we're still fourth. Boucs has gone and Walker's still not 100% so for me its the team that beat Braintree/Grimsby at the height of our form, with Blinks for Walker and Pilks for Boucs. Moke and Reed impact subs.

It should be 4-4-2 all the way now, be true to your word and play who is best, not a favourite, or who has cost money.
We will not get a better chance than this season thanks to the backing from the board, but will they be able to do the same next season if we do not go up? I think not.
Get the defence organised and settled, 2 central midfield players who complement each other, play 2 wingers as wingers not drifting in the middle and get 2 men up front.

I don't agree with the exclusion of Walker, the only way he will get match fit is with decent game time and only then will he be back to being by far and away our best player. However I would like to see Blinkhorn alongside him giving him more opportunities to score, particularly when otherwise he is isolated against bigger defenders; keep Jamie Reed as super sub to bring on as soon as Walker tires.; when Reed has played a full game he has not played as well as when he comes on as sub eager to prove himself and get goals. Definately Meredith back and either Gibson or Fyfiield alongside Doig or Smith. We know what Fyfield can add and I suspect Gibson who is a better defender may also be a footballing center back. Toss up between Doig & Smith, I don't agree with the derrogatory comments about Doig and think also some of the criticism of Brown is ott, he has not really had the chance to bed in.

Poor performance - you have to ask the question - what's Danny Parslow, Jamal Fyfield, Michael Potts and Danny Pilkington done wrong - forgotten men (Potts never even given a chance)
The side is now disjointed - our game doesn't flow any more. Ball up in the air - last two game - strong gust of wind - get it back on the ground.
Last night performances
Ingham - no problem - left unprotected - not sure about the long kicks to his opposing keeper!! Challinor - good steady performance, dealt well with hte speedy O'Brien. Smith, sorry does not derserve his place to many mistakes. Doig - not good enough - may need another pairing at the back. Young Gibson - playing out of position, problems with their winger all night - second goal - cross should have been cut out - stood back and allow him to cross - bring back Mez please. Kerr - 100% great work rate. Brown - waste of a shirt, will never gel with him and Kerr in the same side - too much alike. Paddy - great performance. Chambers - in and out of the game - still dangerous - should have scored when 1 on1 with keeper. Matty Blair better when working the wings. Jason disappointed, lacking sharpness, doesn't help when balls are played up to him at pace or over hit - also in the air with two 6' 6" + central defenders on his back.
Agree we needed changes - should have changed Jason/Brown at half time. Swallow - was he any better than Chambers - why ignore Pilkington - only a few weeks ago had rave reports. Blinks - he would be in my starting line. Reed - always said he's a good impact player - yes he scores goals, but how many of his goals are score when coming off the bench against a tiring side. How many has he scored when starting a game? I would still like to see him coming off the bench. Tonne looks good - creative player, just what we need since Boucs left - why not try him.
Gary - you need to have a hard look at those players who are keeping the seats in the stand warm - they may just do it for us. We have problems in defence - FACT - I would go with Parslow and Jamal (or Doig) - we know what they can do - neither will let us down - unfortunately TY is out for a few more weeks. Put Brown on a slow boat back to Fleetwood, not good enough for them, and certainly not good enough for us. Swallow, I would let him migrate to other parts with all the other swallows.
Lets bounce back

Rogue 84-you're right-Can't understand why I left Paddy out! In for Pilks then and Pilks to bench in place of poor old Potts who hasn't had a chance. Perhaps I missed Paddy out because we now have too many players? Of these Brown and Ashikodi can go on loan. GM made mistake with both of them.

Some of you guys really do need to get your facts right and watch the whole game. It's no good blaming players that have done nothing wrong during the game just because you don't like them and it suits you to use them as a scape goat (this could be construed as TROLLING). Before anyone says anything, yes I agree that there is nothing wrong with criticism, but let's make it constructive rather than personal.

Running with such a big squad is confusing because GM stated early-doors that he was more used to working with small squads, so why the change of direction? Maybe, there are things we don't know but on last-night's performance we have a disjointed side, made-up of too many players who are strangers and the balance is wrong. Would stick with Jason Walker but in a 4-4-2 line-up for Saturday(with Blinkhorn), bring in Pilkington, Tonne and Moke(for Brown, Swallow and Chambers) and possibly up to three changes to the Back Four who on last-night's performance will cost us dear.(Certainly Meredith and Parslow, possibly Oyebanjo as well). We must not sit back or be pushed back at Grimsby but try to dictate play and be positive from the very start!

It seems to me that something must have gone wrong in the dressing room. When you consider how far our performances have slipped since the new players have arrived, maybe jealousy has ruined team spirit. Also what is the point of having a player like Tonne who is highly regarded by a team much higher than we are if he isn't even going to be in the squad ? I also was told last night that Ashikodi is being made to train with the youth team. It all just gives the impression of a disjointed, dispirited and disorganized squad which is such a shame after all that this season promised at one time.

Poor performance - you have to ask the question - what's Danny Parslow, Jamal Fyfield, Michael Potts and Danny Pilkington done wrong - forgotten men (Potts never even given a chance) The side is now disjointed - our game doesn't flow any more. Ball up in the air - last two game - strong gust of wind - get it back on the ground. Last night performances Ingham - no problem - left unprotected - not sure about the long kicks to his opposing keeper!! How anyone can suggest that Challinor had a reasonable game is beyond me, at least on 4 occasions the crocked winger o'brien left him for dead, Matty Blair covered 30 to 40 yards to bale him out and make atackle, Ingham, Smith and Kerr were constantly having to shout at him to get in the right position for throws & set peices etc, for goodness sake give him a rest from defence he is becoming a liability. Oh yes I do remember JC did make 1 chance saving challenge last night

I was ridiculed on here a few weeks ago when I said that we didn`t need all these new signings as I felt it would upset the balance of the team and the team spirit that was obviously there at the time.
Well the chickens have come home to roost now and I feel sorry for the likes of Parslow,Fyfield,Pilk
ington,Moke and Potts. We were playing well and O.K mistakes were being made but younger players need encouragement not banishing to the sidelines.
GM has done tremendously well since being appointed but I`m afraid he`s gone off at a tangent since Xmas.
In my opinion he should have shown faith with his original squad and I believe we would have been in a better position than the one we are in now.
All is not lost yet but two Wembley appearances look more remote now.
Living in Southport I saw Grimsby play last Fri night and they are a very fast direct side.Watch out for their right winger Coulson!Definitely need Mez in to cope with him.

Yes BertieB I was at the game last night and saw Brown give the ball away with his first four passes. However, for some to say that the guy shouldn't put on a York shirt again is, IMO, a bit harsh... rather than point blame at anyone.. and I am not saying that you were.. the main point of my comment was that for all his woeful contribution with the ball (which I thought improved as the game wore on) he did move when he didn't have it. The basis for quite the best football I've ever seen at Bootham Crescent earlier this season was that off the ball our team made themselves available so that the man in possession had three or four options at least... when we lost the ball every team player then closed down the opposition, starting with Walker, often in their penalty area. Brown might end up being a distant unhappy memory but unlike the majority of our team last night he found space and gave an option for team mates. If our more skilled players had done this we might not have been so politely placing the ball onto their defenders foreheads so much last night and played a little more on the floor.. something which everyone on the thread would undoubtedly be happier with! C'mon City btw!!
