Tough prize as pressure cranks up for York City

Gary Mills Gary Mills

IT’S time to get tough, declared York City boss Gary Mills ahead of tonight’s crucial Blue Square Bet Premier clash against Gateshead at Bootham Crescent (kick off 7.30pm).

The Minstermen manager believes if his side are to achieve their promotion aims, they must be able to cope with the high-pressure matches that will dominate the run-in to the end of the campaign.

York can move nine points clear of the Tynesiders with victory under the gaze of the Premier Sports TV cameras and Gateshead chief Ian Bogie has described the encounter as a “must-win” game for his side.

While Mills doesn’t see the match in such stark terms, he is more than aware of the significance a victory would have on City’s bid for the play-offs.

“We know we want to win,” he said. “We know the difference it will make if we win – we will go nine points ahead if we do, we will be three points ahead if we lose. Going back three weeks, there was probably a point’s difference between us and Gateshead.

“We have worked hard to get to where we are at this moment in time and, of course, it’s a big game. Of course, if we win it, it will make a major difference in terms of Gateshead catching us.

“It’s another massive game for York City Football Club.

“I am looking forward to it. This is what it is all about. If we are going to be the team and the football club we want to be we have to handle these situations. Those clubs that do are the ones that end up being successful. If you don’t, you fade away.”

He added: “We are prepared. I have got a good squad of players.

“We know what Gateshead are capable of. They beat us up there in September and we owe them one in a way for that. I am looking forward to the game.”

With left-back James Meredith left out of the line-up against Stockport and substitutes Jamie Reed and Matthew Blinkhorn scoring the late goals that handed City a 2-1 win, Mills has a number of players knocking on the door for first-team spots. Only David McGurk is missing through injury.

“I’ve had decisions to make all season,” he said.

“When you increase the size of your squad you have more decisions to make. The situation is still the same. You can only pick 11 and I will pick the 11 that I think will win the game tonight.

“It’s as simple as that. I pick it purely on me, as a manager, selecting a side to win a game of football. Whether it is the same 11 (as Saturday) is totally down to my judgement. Players want to play and some players aren’t playing at all.

“Sometimes I have to make tactical changes and players have to realise that.

“I wouldn’t expect, and wouldn’t want, any player to be happy about not being in the 11. But we are all in this together and I think we proved that on Saturday.”

Results went for us again last night and a win tonight will leave us only 2 points behind Luton.Others, apart from Grimsby, who are close to us seem to be falling away a bit so 3 points tonight can be described as "Massive". Come on City!

It’s a fact that the most successful teams have a settled defence i.e. goalkeeper & back 4. I bet those that go that far back could name the back 4 of the really successful teams e.g. the league winning teams of Spurs, Arsenal, Liverpool, Man Utd, Leeds etc and that equally applies to the lower divisions and York City. I am sure those City supporters old enough could instantly name the back 4 of our most successful post war teams. Now name me the regular back 4 this season, there isn’t one; and I guess without going through the records there are not many consecutive games where the same defence has been picked.
Even in these days of squad rotation, it is rare for managers of the best teams to tinker with the defence. Admittedly suspensions now play a bigger part, but that is not the main reason that we have had an unsettled defence, the reason being no one formation has performrd consistently.
The understanding, that consistency in defender selection creates, eliminates the mistakes that have cost us points. Nevertheless it is credit to the team that we sit where we are in the league , but where could we have been with a settled defence?
This really is not the time of the season to still be deciding what our best defensive formation is, but for various reasons we are where we are. To push on for the rest of this season, and next, Gary needs to decide what exactly is our best back 4 and stick with it as far as is possible, form, injuries & suspensions permitting

Grimsby still have to go to Fleetwood, Wrexham and Luton. At home they have us, Kiddy , Gateshead and Southport. I fancy them to get 5th but no better - behind us in 3rd or 4th.
Win tonight is MASSIVE indeed with H&Y and Tamworth both home next!

Let’s get behind the lads tonight, its time for the big push and we need to lift the roof off the Longhurst stand – Two strikers from the start please Gary!!

While not wanting to criticise Gary Mills, who has generally done a great job -
uhtred - agree completely with your comment about a settled defence.

3 points tonight please and we will have developed a reasonable cushion between us and 6th spot. 3 points will also get some momentum going as, unlike the teams above us and Grimsby, we don't have a decent record of stringing wins together this season.

I fancy Walker to score tonight and begin to get his form back.

COYR.

No complacency, no slip ups and no stupid predictions from Barry "kiss of death" Parker! C'mon City!!!

What amazes me is that Southport are 5th having lost 10 games( we lost 5) 2 points behind us but have a goal difference of minus 4! We have tonights game in hand on them and a 30 goal difference. I doubt they will end up in the play-offs.

His assistant commentator, Chris Jones, is just as lugubrious!! (Don't give any silly free kicks away round the box/I'm getting a bit nervous now and Barry with his master of trivia comments like his slide-rule distances - a free-kick from 27 and a half yards out and I make it three minutes, 12 and half seconds left etc!!) Still, suppose they mean well but there are times when they seem to talk us into a problem!! City should go 4-4-2 to-night- possibly Walker and Blinkhorn up front but with plenty of pace, width and movement in midfield to support and lay-on the chances and when necessary, to do the tracking back. Maybe, Blair, Kerr, MacLaughlin and Swallow to start with and if we don't grip the game, then Chambers and Tonne to come on for the two wide midfielders? The defensive formation is anyone's guess. A good start is a must and let's keep The Heed pressed back into their own half and when they come our way, make sure we put away our chances. Going for 3-1 City!!

I echo the comments about how important this game is, for a win would do us the world of good. But City usually approach these type of games in the right frame of mind, it is fixtures like Alfreton (away) that will often bring the worst out of us. City are far too unpredictable to try and forecast the result, I do more hoping than predicting these days.

I watched Heed play Braintree a few weeks ago. Their wide players cross the ball in very early for Shaw to get on the end of. I can see Smith being selected as we need two defenders who are brave enough to put their heads in where it hurts. TY and Jamal were static for the two goals Shaw scored at their place.

CRAP! no chance, we are a non-laughable side! why change to a complete new back 4 ? why play 4-3-3 ? Not a clue, GM has lost the plot! Walker is not the player he was! CRAP, absolute crap! I really did think we were going to do it this year! Why is not Meredith not playing ? no chance of making the play-offs at the rate!

I really am completely and utterly sick of our defence. In previous seasons our defence was great. Now it's awful. You can't be succesful consistently unless you've got a strong defence that doesn't let in many goals. No promotion or even playoffs with this defence. End of.

2 nil down! game & season over! all that money spent from the Mcgills! laughable! should have sold Walker when he was on form!
Rubbish!

Put this down as a blip, although worryingly the players do not seem to have met each other before and think they are playing for John Beck?

Dire game really dissapointed. We really need to sort out scoring first it just seems that we are chasing goals every match and it's frustrating. Well done Reedy for coming on and scoring an his free kick was superb just a shame it didn't go in. We simply weren't good enough tonight and we need to be beating these better teams in order to be up there at the end. Perhaps we could play 442 with either reed or blinkhorn up front with Walker as this would provide both strength/height with finishing from Walker should he regain form. Nevertheless we can rely on Mills and I'm sure we'll be there by the end.

Come on, this has been coming for some time. When was the last time we really played well, before Christmas ?
Our luck has finaly run out after riding it for some time with Mills not seeming to know what his first 11 is. We had our warning on Saturday and still blew it. And for gods sake Brown should never play for us again, what the hell Mills has seen in him is anyones guess. He needs to join Ashikodi filed under never seen again.

Oh dear. It's getting very tight around the play off zone now.Saw the match on Premier Sports and you looked good first half but poor defense and frenetic play in last 20 minutes.
Looking forward to clash of the Titans part 1 at Blundell Park Saturday.
Up the Mariners!
