Match preview: Grimsby Town v York City

Ex-City midfielder Manny Panther Ex-City midfielder Manny Panther

IN-FORM Grimsby Town will host York City having won nine of their last ten matches and shared the spoils in the other.

Barrow are the only side to hold the Mariners in that time, drawing 2-2 at their Holker Street home on January 24.

The North Lincolnshire side’s last defeat, meanwhile, came in a 3-2 reverse to Salisbury during an FA Cup second round replay at Blundell Park in December.

That tie was decided after extra-time, meaning the Mariners are undefeated in 21 matches over 90 minutes since Luton’s 1-0 Blue Square Bet Premier away triumph on October 21.

Surprisingly, the Hatters’ victory represented Grimsby’s third league loss in six days, following on from being beaten 2-1 by the Minstermen at Bootham Crescent and 3-1 by Ebbsfleet.

But the former Football League Trophy winners, now managed jointly by Rob Scott and Paul Hurst, have not looked back since.

They have moved to within two points and two places of the play-off slots and also booked their spot in the FA Trophy quarter-finals – at home to City or Ebbsfleet – with Tuesday night’s 2-1 win at Bath.

Tomorrow’s match will also pit the division’s joint-second top goalscorers against each other.

Only table-topping Fleetwood (67) have netted more times than City and Grimsby, who have both racked up 62 goals in 2011/12.

At home, though, the Mariners are out on their own, having scored eight more goals in front of their own fans than any other Blue Square Bet Premier team – City are the next best – with an impressive return of 43 goals.

Liam Hearn has spearheaded the Mariners’ attacking threat by netting 25 times this season.

His tally has included four hat-tricks with a four-goal haul against his former club Alfreton complemented by trebles in other victories over Barrow, Stockport and Bath.

Hearn has managed a total of 23 goals in 30 league games despite failing to hit the target during the first ten matches of the season.

City will not face former midfielder Manny Panther, however, with the Scotsman having returned to Aldershot after being sent off in his last loan match for Grimsby – the 3-1 New Year’s Day victory over Lincoln.

Defender Bradley Wood remains doubtful with an ankle injury that caused him to miss Tuesday’s Trophy tie.

But Kiernan Hughes-Mason, Ian Miller, Louie Soares and Kenny Arthur, who were all cup-tied at Bath, will be available against the Minstermen.

Miller is set to return at centre-back in place of Shaun Pearson but the other three players may need to be content with places on the bench.

Grimsby (probable): McKeown, Silk, Garner, Miller, Townsend, Coulson, Disley, Thanoj, Artus, Elding, Hearn.

Why put a Picture of Manny on the article when he is not even on loan to Grimsby anymore. Fair enough if he was playing.......Anyway tough game tomorrow......No idea what the line up will be with the return of Walker and the new signings......Need to keep Elding and Hearn on a leash or they will punish us.

Grimsby are asking for helpers to clear the snow off the pitch on Saturday. With overnight temperatures forecast to be -4 it looks touch and go.

I said when we beat them at BC that it was a massive win, and their recent run has confirmed how important that late Chambers strike was.
arguably our hardest game between now and the end of the season if you take into account recent form and their home record.
i'll be happy with a point, if we win this, it's a huge step towards securing a play-off spot.
good luck lads - if the game's on!

It would give us a unbelievable lift if we could get three points at Grimsby in this vital game. Although Grimsby seem optomistic that the game will be played, I would be really surprised if it does go ahead. A severe frost is forecast for that area tonight and the pitch is still covered in snow. So when the volunteers remove the snow they will probably find a frozen pitch underneath. We will all be listening for the announcements tomorrow morning, before hopefully heading off towards Cleethorpes.

Grimsby fan living in York. The weather in NE Lincs has its own micro-climate. This is due to being very close to the North Sea and the Humber. As such Grimsby games have gone ahead when other teams' games have not.

Some parts of the pitch are frozen, mainly under the big newish stand. The ground staff seem reasonably confident that shifting the snow in the morning (which also protects the pitch tonight) will reveal a playable pitch. We will see. I suspects that both teams want the game to go ahead. Fixture congestion does neither team any good.

It will probably come down to a) whether the actual weather is better or worse than the forecast(s), and b) whether the referee really wants the game to go ahead or not. There is supposed to be a pitch inspection at 1200 hrs. This seems late to me. We have exiled fans travelling as well as all the City fans.

Having seen all of various comments and views, I think that there is a 55% chance that the game will be on. A fine line. The Fishy is a busy and popular fans site and is a good source of the earliest information as to whether the game is on or not.

We will have 5 players back into contention after last Tues. Plenty of pace and fire-power if needed towards the end of the game.

Some Town fans have tried to register on City sites to give information on pubs etc. They found it very hard to register. The Blundell Park Hotel opposite the ground is a possibility but it will be busy. There are a number of decent pubs in Cleethorpes town centre, about 2 miles past the ground, towards Cleethorpes railway station.

If travelling fans have time, Steeles or the Ocean Fish Bar do excellent haddock and chips to eat in or take away. I shall be eating at Ocean before or after the match. Ocean is on St Peter's Avenue, the central street where most of the shops are. A car park is opposite.

Having travelled many times to Grimsby I like to avoid the Yorkshire Wolds (Market Weighton, South Cave etc) in bad weather, even if it is the shortest route. Besides the hills, the roads can be bad and there is fog sometimes when travelling back.

Going from Market Weighton to Hull by the main road involves changing roads and there are a lot of busy roundabouts near the Humber Bridge.

A good route, which is also flat, is to head for Selby and take the A63. You get on the motorway quicker as well. These roads are better and well-gritted.

Avoiding the Humber tolls (£3 each way at present) can be done by using motorways but it is the long way round and does not save money.

Save journey there and back to all travelling fans. Would normally take a maximum of 90 mins in normal weather, to get parked up.
