Members of York Junior Angling Club could be set to benefit from a cash bonus awarded to the York & District Amalgamation of Anglers
JUNIOR angling in York has been given a welcome cash boost – thanks to the efficiency of clubs in the area.
The York & District Amalgamation of Anglers (YDAA) have been awarded a bonus by the Environment Agency as a reward for their clubs submitting a high percentage of match return cards.
The amalgamation receives £1 per card submitted and, at the end of the year, bonuses are awarded by the Agency.
YDAA officials have once again pledged to use the money – about £500 – to help local clubs with junior sections to encourage more youngsters into the sport.
New Earswick Juniors Angling Club, York Junior Angling Club and York Angling Association’s junior section will all be in line for funds, along with the YDAA Junior Angling Championships.
Bob Hutchinson, YDAA honorary secretary, said: “When a club holds a match they should fill in a match return card – giving details of club name, date of match, venue, number of competitors, duration of match, number of anglers weighing fish in, first, second and third winning weights, total weight, species caught in greatest numbers, then second greatest numbers, followed by other species caught, finally river and weather conditions.
“This is sent to the Environment Agency and we get £1 per card returned. At the end of the year these are totalled up and there is a sliding scale to trigger various bonus amounts “We have managed to get the top bonus for the past few years.”
Hutchinson added: “Clubs are invited to submit to YDAA projects to improve and encourage junior angling in York, and the parent body usually gives and equal share to each junior section. “The majority of the money usually is spent on buying various tackle items, instructional videos etc.
“Thanks are due to club secretaries filling in and returning the cards, as without them this money for the juniors would not be forthcoming.”
