York City's Chris Doig eager to catch the eye

CENTRE-BACK Chris Doig is determined to grab his chance at York City.

The former Northampton Town and Aldershot defender has joined the Minstermen until the end of the season and is eager to use the spell to kick-start his career.

Having struggled to find a permanent club since returning from a spell in Australia with Central Coast Mariners, the 30-year-old is keen to secure a long-term deal in England.

City boss Gary Mills was looking to add more experience to his backline and Doig has vowed to repay his faith.

An eye-catching stint at Bootham Crescent could see Doig avoid the need to join the ever-expanding group of players looking for new employers every summer.

He said: “I want to play for as long as I can and at the highest level that I can week in, week out.

“I’ve still got lots to give although football’s a difficult world now and it’s not the game it used to be.

“It’s a struggle and this summer will be interesting when thousands of players are out of contract.

“Clubs haven’t got the money they once had and, while people look at the Premier League lifestyle, there’s very little glamour in the lower leagues.

“That’s why it’s important for me to play as many games as I can between now and the end of the season and then see what happens.

“I’ve not had the best of seasons but, hopefully, I can settle down now and be successful.”
