YORK City manager Gary Mills has admitted he could look to loan out players with his squad having swollen to 24 senior professionals.
But the Bootham Crescent chief will not be letting “three or four” go as he guards against an injury crisis between now and the end of the Blue Square Bet Premier campaign.
During last month’s transfer window, Mills allowed three players to leave the club with Andre Boucaud and David McDermott departing permanently and Liam Henderson joining Forest Green Rovers on loan.
He also oversaw five new arrivals with Scott Brown, Matthew Blinkhorn, Ben Swallow, Erik Tonne and Chris Doig all becoming Minstermen since the turn of the year.
That means eight players will be in the stands on match days – a scenario the City chief has always been keen to avoid in the past.
On rising numbers at Bootham Crescent, Mills said: “There’s a possibility somebody might go out on loan. I’m hoping for no negativity from anybody who isn’t in my 16 for matches but, if there is, there’s more chance that they will be going out.
“We’ve got a squad of players to take us forward to the end of the season and I won’t be letting three or four go because we will pick up more injuries and suspensions and they will be needed.”
Ahead of this afternoon’s FA Trophy third round home tie with Ebbsfleet, Mills also added that the fixture problems caused by further progress in the competition will not deter him from trying to reach the Wembley final.
Should City reach the quarter-final and two-legged semi-final stage, it would mean switching long away trips to Newport, Bath and Cambridge, arranged for weekends set aside for the Trophy, to midweek dates.
“I’ve said before that it should be a midweek competition like the Carling Cup and I can’t understand why that can’t be done,” Mills reasoned.
“It won’t put me off trying to get to the final though.
“We want to get to Wembley in the Trophy first and then we can concentrate on those rearranged away games to make sure we get to Wembley twice by reaching the play-off final.”
Should City make it to both finals, they would be the first club to do so since the play-off final was switched to Wembley in 2007.
Meanwhile, City remain hopeful that this afternoon’s FA Trophy third round home tie against Ebbsfleet will go ahead.
A local referee deemed the pitch “playable” yesterday and advised the Kent club to travel north despite the recent freezing temperatures.
The Minstermen have had covers on the pitch since Monday and feel the game has every chance of beating the weather.
Should the match be postponed, Ebbsfleet’s travelling and accommodation costs would need to be deducted from the eventual game’s gate receipts, which are shared on a 50-50 basis between the two teams.

Is it just me or can anyone else not understand what Ashikodi is doing here ? We were told we would see the best of him in January when he was properly fit, it's now February and as far as I can see he is nowhere near a first team place. We seem to be paying wages and not getting much back.

Don't quite understand what the issue is with loaning players if we really need any of them back, not as if we would, we can recall them.arsene.about.york wrote: Is it just me or can anyone else not understand what Ashikodi is doing here ?
