Loan off-load plan for York City’s fringe players

YORK City manager Gary Mills has admitted he could look to loan out players with his squad having swollen to 24 senior professionals.

But the Bootham Crescent chief will not be letting “three or four” go as he guards against an injury crisis between now and the end of the Blue Square Bet Premier campaign.

During last month’s transfer window, Mills allowed three players to leave the club with Andre Boucaud and David McDermott departing permanently and Liam Henderson joining Forest Green Rovers on loan.

He also oversaw five new arrivals with Scott Brown, Matthew Blinkhorn, Ben Swallow, Erik Tonne and Chris Doig all becoming Minstermen since the turn of the year.

That means eight players will be in the stands on match days – a scenario the City chief has always been keen to avoid in the past.

On rising numbers at Bootham Crescent, Mills said: “There’s a possibility somebody might go out on loan. I’m hoping for no negativity from anybody who isn’t in my 16 for matches but, if there is, there’s more chance that they will be going out.

“We’ve got a squad of players to take us forward to the end of the season and I won’t be letting three or four go because we will pick up more injuries and suspensions and they will be needed.”

Ahead of this afternoon’s FA Trophy third round home tie with Ebbsfleet, Mills also added that the fixture problems caused by further progress in the competition will not deter him from trying to reach the Wembley final.

Should City reach the quarter-final and two-legged semi-final stage, it would mean switching long away trips to Newport, Bath and Cambridge, arranged for weekends set aside for the Trophy, to midweek dates.

“I’ve said before that it should be a midweek competition like the Carling Cup and I can’t understand why that can’t be done,” Mills reasoned.

“It won’t put me off trying to get to the final though.

“We want to get to Wembley in the Trophy first and then we can concentrate on those rearranged away games to make sure we get to Wembley twice by reaching the play-off final.”

Should City make it to both finals, they would be the first club to do so since the play-off final was switched to Wembley in 2007.

Meanwhile, City remain hopeful that this afternoon’s FA Trophy third round home tie against Ebbsfleet will go ahead.

A local referee deemed the pitch “playable” yesterday and advised the Kent club to travel north despite the recent freezing temperatures.

The Minstermen have had covers on the pitch since Monday and feel the game has every chance of beating the weather.

Should the match be postponed, Ebbsfleet’s travelling and accommodation costs would need to be deducted from the eventual game’s gate receipts, which are shared on a 50-50 basis between the two teams.

Ashikodi, Parslow, Potts, Oyebanjo should probs all go on loan.

Yes to Ashikodi but not Parslow and Oyebanjo. As GM says we will have injuries and suspensions so cover must be maintained. He could I suppose let Potts get some match fitness elsewhere because he has had little opportunity this season and is a decent player.I think he will only loan 2 players and if so those are the two I think he will loan out.Ashikodi has more to prove than Potts and his reputation may not help him .

Is it just me or can anyone else not understand what Ashikodi is doing here ? We were told we would see the best of him in January when he was properly fit, it's now February and as far as I can see he is nowhere near a first team place. We seem to be paying wages and not getting much back.

The new signings will force the managers hand somewhat I feel for me we seem to have an excess of cover for mid field bearing in mind GM sees Fyfield as something other than CB. I would not like Potts to go as he seems a direct replacement for Paddy & to an extent Kerr, Moke looks a possibility as he has struggled to impress consistently, Ashkodi as like a lot of posters I do not see what he is here for & I guess Oyebanjo fortunately GM has the job of finding worthwhile loan positions for the players.
If I was one of our players I would make sure I impressed on the training ground this week, shame about today Tues will be a lower gate to split & less recovery time before the Grimsby encounter which will give the manager a good idea which players can walk the walk, tough game!

Ashikodi looked a dud signing right from the start, perhaps Mills thought he could change him but for me it's not going to happen.

Totally agree, what on earth his he doing here absolute waste of valuable money! Get rid asap.

IMO the following should go Parslow, Reed, Potts and Banjo. Don't quite understand what the issue is with loaning players if we really need any of them back, not as if we would, we can recall them.

Only at the end of the agreed loan period. No recall during loan period.

I'd welcome some being sent to Darlo. They need the help, and are not competing for the playoffs.

GM said when he took over at City that he was used to working with small squads, so it should come as no surprise he is looking to put a few out on loan, plus the wages he will save! Agree with above, if Darlo have their current embargo on transfers lifted by the Conference Board then Craig Liddle's team might be a possible destination for one or two - just in time for their home game on Saturday against Wrexham!! Though McGurk and Fyfield are currently injured, when they gain fitness it's hard to see five central defenders being retained and when Jason Walker is fit, maybe Ashikodi can then return to Kettering when hopefully they will soon have resolved their current financial problems? Moke and possibly Potts are other possible departures but I would definately keep Jamie Reed just in case Walker's fitness comes into question again. As for our new loanees - can't see any point in keeping them on the bench and GM needs to get them straight into the side on Tuesday night - weather permitting!!

If the new Conference proposals are implemented, City will probably have to make massive cuts to their playing budget for next season. City already have nine players under contract beyond this season - Ingham, Blair, Henderson, McGurk, McLaughlin, Oyebanjo, Potts, Reed and Walker, so obviously some form of squad trimming will have to be done, sooner or later. This could be a make-or-break season for York City, because getting promotion, or winning the FA Trophy, would give us a lifeline.

Reference theConference proposals I can only hope that the McGills support will continue the issue of loan notes seems to be an accounting mechanism to push up the McGills to a higher position amongst potential creditors though I could be wrong. It may be that the level of support would be adjusted to the level of risk but I am pretty sure that JM does not envisage getting his investment in City back any time soon.
It would be good to realise the dream this season but as we have seen despite being a good club with decent players there are few guarantees heres hoping this is our season.

hope its not the end if we dont get promoted this season the mcgills have bankrolled the club up to now but the new conference rules mean this will come to an end promotion & a trophy win could net up a million if not the way the council are now stalling with the new stadium & the possibility of government intervention could be the final nail in our coffin

looking for comfirmation on The trophy rules regarding re-arrangements.

i have been reading several forums and its a confused picture,
Its clear there is a fair chance tomorrows match is going to be off again ( hope not), but where do we go from there, there is mixed answers to this question. some fans from other teams are saying it must be played on the 1st available date which would be Saturday coming . some are saying Next tuesday (the date set aside if the game needed a replay) , we all know that trophy matches come before league games , but to what extent.
anybody know the rules for this one.
cheers

Reed!!!!!???? if Jason walker is injured again, Reed is the only other regular goal poacher we have who can play on his own up front. Moses Ashikodi yet to prove his worth and Mathew Blinkhorn more of an hold up player.
Ashley Chambers not strong enough when playing the central position. Banjo also needed as cover particularly if as you suggest Parslow goes.
Not clear why we needed both Tonne & Swallow when we have Pilkington and Chambers also vying for the left sided position.

This is probably a stupid question, but is the FA Trophy draw still on today? Just wondering if it will be York/Ebbsfleet v another/another.

P.S. Certainly not Reed for loan out, but having 9 midfielders including at least 4 left sided is ridiculous at this level.
