Selby TOWN will climb off the bottom of the Northern Counties East League premier division if they win at Maltby Main tomorrow.
The Robins have been a fixture at the foot of the table all season but, having ended a run of ten straight defeats with a late come-from-behind 2-1 victory against title-chasing Winterton last weekend, manager Graham Hodder’s men now face the clichéd six-pointer against their nearest rivals.
“There is a still a long way to go before Selby can talk about safety but this was a very encouraging sign that the players have not thrown in the towel,” said club secretary Tommy Arkley of only Selby’s third win of the season.
“They put on a performance full of energy and pride and this victory should spur them on.”
Two goals in the last ten minutes, from Craig Aspinall and Ben Slater, scooped the points and Selby are only two points behind Maltby – but still eight adrift of third-bottom Lincoln Moorlands having played a game more.
On the transfer front, Tom Hyde has left Flaxley Road to join Armthorpe Welfare, while Phil Jackman also departed to Barton Town Old Boys.
Meanwhile, Tadcaster Albion simply have to start taking their chances, says manager Paul Marshall.
The Brewers have gone five games without a win and, on Tuesday, were beaten 1-0 in the President’s Cup semi-final by Saturday’s league opponents – Barton Town. With Carl Stewart out with a bad back for that tie, and still doubtful for the weekend, Marshall is hoping to get immediate revenge over their cup conquerors at Ings Lane.
“It was a good performance,” said Marshall of the cup loss. “In the second half we battered them. We just don’t look like we are going to score. I am desperate for someone to start taking their chances.
“It is now five games without a win and that’s probably the longest spell since our first season.
“February is a new month and it’s a big month. We have got four games and we need to win them all.”
Harrogate Town, who lost winger Peter Bore to Lincoln City on deadline day, host Corby Town at Wetherby Road in Blue Square Bet North. Harrogate Railway are also at home to Witton Albion in the Evo-Stik League first division north.
