MORE success seems to be the theme for next season, as Dunnington Football Club’s talented young manager aims to build on the success of this past season.

Matty Wain led the Common Road club to second place in the York Minster Engineering League premier division and victory in the Senior League Cup final, defeating Wigginton Grasshoppers 2-1 with goals from Grant Bulmer and Tom Richards.

“This season has gone very well, I think it is the most successful ever for Dunnington,” he said. “With a little bit more luck against Dringhouses we could have pushed them further for the title.”

The season of success for Wain and Dunnington has not gone unnoticed, with the 34-year-old manager receiving an approach for his services from Selby Town.

He said: “I made a promise to the Dunnington chairman that I was not just going to leave after one season. I’m here for at least another year and I am looking forward to building on the success of this past season.”

Wain was quick to praise Josh Tattersall as the standout performer of the season, driving the team on from centre-back with some assured defensive displays in his first season in the senior team.

“Josh has performed really well this season, and is the rightful recipient of our Player of the Year and Player’s Player of the Year awards. Jimmy Willmoth has been a consistent performer going forward, contributing many goals and assists from attacking midfield.”

Building on this successful season will be a difficult task, yet Wain already has transfer targets in mind.

“I’ve spoken to a couple of people about playing for us. Andrew Cox is retiring so a player of his calibre and experience will need to be replaced.

“The reserves won their league and cup last season, so I will be looking to bring some of them through into the senior team.”

The ambitious manager is already looking ahead to next season with great enthusiasm and believes the team can go one step further.

“The next step is the league,” he said. “I believe with the squad we already have, plus a couple of additions and that stroke of luck, we can challenge all the way.”
