BACK-TO-BACK wins have kept Poppleton United in the premier division of the York Minster Engineering Football League.

United followed up a 4-2 midweek win at Haxby with a 2-1 home win over Wilberfoss on Saturday.

They took the lead in the first half through Rob Orr and although Olly Newby levelled, Atilla Szekeres hit the winner in the final five minutes.

Hamilton Panthers battled to a 0-0 draw at home to Copmanthorpe and go into Wednesday’s match with Haxby knowing a win will be enough for them to avoid relegation. York St John remain embroiled in the relegation mire after they lost 6-5 to at home to Riccall.

The visitors, who were cruising at 4-0, scored through Louis Blackwell, Michael Braithwaite, Wayne Brooke (2), Josh Dinsley and Chris Harkin.

The students’ goals came from Mike Wibberley, Jake Colverwell and a Matt Burton hat-trick. A goal in each half for Mikey Brown edged Amotherby closer to promotion from division two after they defeated Heslington 3-0.

Matty Bean also netted, for the fourth game on the trot.

Amotherby need to win one of their remaining two games, both of which are against White Horse, to go up as runners-up. Heworth remain in third place after they beat Huby 5-0 with goals from Lee Bunce (2), Darren Gargen, Dan Horsley and James Dexter. The Amotherby victory ends Strensall’s promotion hopes for the season despite their 3-2 win over White Horse.

John Cooper (2) and Liam Morrison were on target, while Lee Streatham and David Marshall scored for White Horse.

Stamford Bridge wrapped up their season with a 3-0 home win over Rawcliffe thanks to goals from Paul Atkinson, Nick Rank and Nick Shaw.
