Poppleton United eased their relegation worries in the York Minster Engineering Football League premier division with a 2-1 win over York St John.

United’s first win in 11 games lifted them to fourth from bottom with games in hand on most of their fellow strugglers.

The students, who are fifth from bottom, led at the break but second-half goals from Alex Janes and Jon Beech secured Poppleton’s first win since November.

York St John are in action again tonight (6.15pm) at home to second from bottom Hamilton Panthers, while basement side Kartiers travel to Riccall United.

Leaders Dringhouses take on second-placed Huntington Rovers at St Helens Road tonight knowing a win would edge them closer to the title.

Dringhouses suffered their first defeat in eight games at the weekend as they went down 2-0 to Riccall, allowing Huntington to move to within seven points.

Third-placed Dunnington are away to Copmanthorpe tonight as they look to keep their remote title hopes alive.

Selby RSSC went fourth in division one with a 2-1 home win over Hemingbrough United.

Reserve ‘A’ champions Dunnington extended their winning run to ten matches with a 2-0 win against Copmanthorpe.

In Reserve ‘B’, Jim Darlison scored his 22nd goal of the season as second-placed Riccall United edged closer to promotion with a 1-0 win over Thorpe United.

Relegation-threatened Nestlé Rowntree hit four goals in 18 second-half minutes as they won their reserve ‘C’ clash with promotion-chasing Fulford 4-0. The goalscorers were Cliff Baxter, Gareth Clarkson and Dan Combes (2).

Promotion is now looking unlikely for Fulford, while Nestlé need a point from their final game to ensure survival.

Reserve ‘B’ side Dringhouses hit back from a goal down to beat Wigginton 3-1 in the Reserve Cup.

Tom Metcalfe’s goal earned Wigginton a half-time lead, but George Bissett headed Dringhouses level before goals from Luke Whittaker and Mike Byram booked the hosts’ place in the next round.
