LEADERS Malton & Norton RUFC defied hosts Scarborough – and the elements – on their way to a 17th consecutive Yorkshire One victory.

The Ryedale side scored a late try through Teei Piawi to triumph 12-6 over their North Yorkshire rivals in sodden conditions on the East Coast.

Scarborough took first use of the wind and pinned Malton back during the early exchanges through the efforts of their big front five.

With only 12 minutes gone Malton had already conceded two penalties for infringements at the breakdown, Scarborough hooker Matt Jones converting both.

Fortunately for Malton, his form deserted him for the rest of the game and several other efforts missed the target.

The Malton defence held firm during the opening onslaught thanks to some resolute tackling from the forwards.

Just before half-time, Malton were awarded a free-kick for a crooked feed at a scrum.

Sam Triffitt initially took the ball forward and the remainder of the pack piled in behind to drive towards the line.

A quick release to livewire Henry Newitt produced Malt’s first try.

Piawi’s conversion was wide and Scarborough held a deserved 6-5 interval lead.

Malton, playing with the wind in the second half, monopolised territorial position for lengthy periods.

Midway through the half, the first crack appeared in the home defence.

A loose ball was hacked forward by Malton scrum-half Dan Cattle, who just lost out in a foot race for the touch down.

Heading into the final five minutes, a poor clearance was charged down on the home 22-metre line.

Piawi hacked on and won the race to touch down for Malton’s second try. He converted the score and Malton had the lead the first time.

Malton’s defence held firm in the closing stages as they clinched their third win against the Seasiders this season.

The stand-out performers for the visitors were number eight John Dobson and prop Paul Dobson.

An immense defensive effort gained Pocklington a 18-10 success at Doncaster Phoenix – and with it top spot in Yorkshire Two.

After 20 minutes, Doncaster had moved into a ten-point lead with a converted try and penalty.

But Pocklington dragged themselves back into contention and two Nick Bennett penalties in the five minutes before the break made it 10-6.

Pock made a strong start to the second period and fly-half Joe Holbrough sliced through for a try that Bennett converted.

Skipper Matt Webber was yellow-carded for offside, but Pock kept the visitors at bay and wing Ben Hardy-Rollins swooped for an interception try from his own half to make the game safe at the death.

In Yorkshire Three, York RI’s trip to Halifax Vandals was postponed.

Nestlé Rowntree went down 10-8 at Rawmarsh in division five.

A penalty from Atkinson and a try from Bambridge gave Nestlé an eight-point lead after 15 minutes, but their improved performance got no reward as they conceded a try and a late penalty.
