WE’VE been delving through the archives to bring you two pictures of successful sports teams from years gone by.

First up is a squad picture of Selby Shipyard Football Club from 1964 [Larger version of image].

They were a leading team in the York and District League in that era and, that year, the side won the area’s top trophy, the Barkston Ash FA Challenge Cup, when they beat Tadcaster Albion 3-0 in the final.

Two of the goals were headers scored by captain Eddie Palmer and Gordon Simpson netted a penalty.

Two years previously, the team had been the first Selby outfit to win the cup for more than 30 years.

The side in this picture are: back row, from left, Alec Upton, Peter Rowbottam, Gordon Simpson, Peter Cooper, Tommy Hughes, Jimmy Herrington, Peter Deyes, Ray Wilson, George Toone and Terry Palmer.

Front row, Ron Low, seated left, and Eddie Palmer, right, with club officials and management of Cochranes Shipbuilders.

Peter Deyes had previously played for Selby Town and was a permit player with the Shipyard outfit having been a professional with the Robins.

Moving on to rugby union and this picture is of the Rowntrees Rugby Union first XV during the 1962-63 campaign [Larger version of image].

Now named Nestlé Rowntree, the club, who play at Mille Crux, have rejoined the Yorkshire League ladder this season.

The squad in this picture is:

back row, from left, Clive Snowden, Neil Anderson, John Birks, Tony Clark, Derek Pallister, John Eastwood, John Booth and John Kidd.

Middle row, Derek Clarke, captain Jack Rosendale, Stuart Hare and Jimmy Wild.

Front row, Bob Davey, Lindsay Horseman and Tony Marshall.

Peeping through the window is Ken Durham.
