RECORD prize money will be on offer for the final day of York Racecourse’s season in October.

An extra £50,000 has been added to the kitty for Coral Sprint Trophy day on Saturday, October 9 – meaning more than £175,000 will be up for grabs.

It will also push total prize money for Knavesmire’s 2010 season past the £5 million barrier.

Nicholas Wrigley, chairman of York Racecourse, said: “This is what we are all about at York; when we are able to invest in the race programme that is what we do. “Despite the pressure on levy funds, we have received great support from owners, sponsors and racegoers this year so our natural inclination is to put money back in to the sport. “Across the year we have been able to deliver record prize money and we remain grateful for the support we have received.”

William Derby, Chief Executive and Clerk of the Course, added: “As we head towards our final two days of the year we are 12 per cent ahead on attendances compared to last year.”
