Ozgur Hazar wins bronze medal in Mission Submission grappling bill

ONE of the brightest prospects on York’s booming martial arts scene struck precious metal in a bill at Selby.

Teenager Ozgur Hazar captured a bronze medal in the Mission Submission grappling bill held at Selby Leisure Centre, where he impressed several judges of the sport.

His coach Gaz Watkinson, who runs the Multi Masters Academy in York’s Layerthorpe, hailed the youngster’s potential.

Said Watkinson: “For a young lad of just 17 he has got fantastic ability. He is going to do well and is definitely a name to watch out for.”

Hazar’s bronze was not the only haul returned by a York fighter from the grappling outings.

Fellow MMA member Mark Jones continued his impressive season’s form with a gold medal.

Both he and Hazar are scheduled to be on the bill for the first cage fighting competition held in York at the Energise sports complex in Acomb this Sunday. The event, entitled Cage Confrontation 1, has attracted a programme of more than 15 bouts. It starts at 2pm at the Cornland Road venue.

Tickets, which cost £30 for VIP cage side, £20 standard and £10 for under-14s, are available from Energise, Sharp hairdressing in Bridge Street, Kennedy’s bar, the Black Horse in Wigginton, and the Maltings pub, or by phoning co-promoters Watkinson on 07798 765259 or Tony Dias on 07956 612667.
