York City beat Rushden 2-0 in Blue Square Bet Premier

York City began life after Richard Brodie with a 2-0 win over Rushden & Diamonds in the Blue Square Bet Premier.

Winger Peter Till opened the scoring at Bootham Crescent on 76 minutes and substitute Leon Constantine, signed late on Friday as a free agent, netted the second two minutes later.

Brodie made his Crawley Town debut as a substitute in their 1-1 draw with Fleetwood Town following his transfer on Tuesday.

Took some time to get going but this is a great result. Come on City! And well done Leon who was told he was too old for us and clapped out on this forum. Hope you can follow it up for us. I see no reason why we can't kick on from here. Especially as security is, and I kid you not, unit-meet. Let's all get behind the lads.

Gash not happy when he got subbed, and esp. when Leon puts it in the back of the net after he came on, poor effort today from the team, not looking as sharp as they should be, not much team work and no such luck with the ball. rankine should have scored from 6 feet away, but a win is a win and this is what we needed to get going this season

Well done! not convincing 1st half could have gone either way but a step in the right direction. Poor Ranks thought for all his efforts he would get one but some matches he cannot buy a goal just let down by a lack of fine control under preassure. Thought Gash was good very busy knocking on little touches for the others to feed off worked hard for the team. Only worry for me was I thought we were trying to walk the ball into their net not many players were willing to take responsibility for more speculative attempts something an on form Brodes would do. But a more confident City working harder definitely getting there, 3 points off the play off pack work to do but isnt there always. Thought Leon looked useful getting some give & goes just like to see if he can strike the ball well from distance.

A great result today. Not a good performance by any stretch of the imagination, far from it but we were never going to concede a goal from a poor R&D side. A win is still a win and we are edging towards the right end of the table. Still a bit baffled with MF team selection and tactics though, Till is not a left winger, great on the right side mind, and Smithy is so ineffective out wide right. Gashy out of sorts IMO and whilst he had a couple of nice touches there was no end product from him. Leon had a good debut, held the ball up and distributed intellegently and certainly made a difference when he came on. As I stated in a previous post I have seen him numourous times and always tought he was rather lazy, but whilst he is in a City shirt I will hold judgment for several games. This result could just kick start the season, and has put a smile on my face for the weekend

Well we won so that really is all that matters. The actual performance was nothing special as neither side had a shot on target until City scored. I was sitting in the Main Stand when Martin Foyle told McDermott that he was going on. Foyle told the fourth official that number 8 Till, was the player being withdrawn, the fourth official put the numbers on his board, but within 15 seconds Till had scored. So McDermott was told to put his tracksuit back on and sit down. So Mr Foyle was saved by the skin of his teeth. To be honest Gash and Rankine both struggled up front against decent defenders. Constantine can be pleased with his goal, but he looks to need match practice. When Courtney came on and Parslow went into the centre, we looked better balanced. Jonathan Smith has still to show us his best form in midfield. Otherwise everybody should be happy, for any win is a good win.

I thought City looked much more balanced once Courtney came on and Till move to the right, just disappointed for McDermott who should have replaced Smith in the second half. Gash was poor today, especially his first touch which is usually good, but Leon looked promising....

Was surprised myself that Gash and not Rankine was replaced.Rankine runs around like a headless chicken while at least Gash holds the ball up and brings others into play.Result was more imprtant than performance but we still have a lot of improvement if we are to make a playoff push.Guess the fact Ingham had nothing to do shows how comfortable we were at the back and agree we look solid with Parslow at centre half and Courtney at right back.Smith was poor and so was Barrett for me with Lawless his usual busy self holding the midfield together.Need Constantaine to improve his fitness and Purcell to recover from injury which will improve squad.

Let's face it! The McGills are cutting and running at the end of the season but not before selling any assets we have got. Mark my words they will not be here much longer and city's real supporters will be left with us and the rugby club playing at an undeveloped Huntingdon Road stadium. The McGills want their money, the council are in debt = no York City FC. All you true supporters start saving for the buckets.

If you listen to Foyle's interview Baggy, he said Till was put on the left to attack their rightback who was a midfield stand in and thought that would be Rushden's weak link.
Good result and look forward to a local game for me next week.

A welcome 3 points today but not a brilliant performance against a side offering not a lot. From the first half you would bank on 0-0. Agree with Tony Canham, Gash (and I am a great fan of his) was off it today with his first touch. Ball ran away from him a number of times. Would like to have seen McDermott on 2nd half with Till right and Smith withdrawn. Courtney made a difference when he came on. Leon looked promising. Hope the Chesterfield reserve game mid-week will help him start to build his match fitness. Any idea how long before Purcell is back? I believe Martin said he was still not back training. Final important point - can I make a request to have last seasons suppliers of pies reinstated. They have gone from Championship to Unibond status spoiling part of the match day experience. At least did not have to queue outside the bar today.

Very relieved and pleased with three points today. Very solid at the back and some promising interplay between Till, Courtney and Constantine may indicate better things to come.

Felt sorry for Rankine who worked his socks off. His composure will improve with his fitness levels. Would like to see Gashy getting into the six yard box more often.

Central midfield still the weak spot, so looking forward to getting Levi back in three weeks time.Smith on the right didn't work from an attacking viewpoint so I'm not sure what McDermott has to do to get a game.

Anyway, I thought the crowd were patient with City today and just as the natives started getting restless, we scored.

The only way is up.

Yesterday was a typical Foyle team performance, forgettable. Baring a 10 minute spell you could have taken a nap and given the atmosphere I think most did.
It's 3 points but nothing else is really worthy of a mention.Foyle might have been delighted but apart from the 3 points i'm not not anyone else was. Usuall 2/10 entartainment value.

I dont understand all this moaning about City not being entertaining? When have York ever been that easy? A win is a win and its three points. Like redblueblur said, buy a dvd if its not good enough!

The first half was forgettable, but I thought City played well in the second. Defence looked much better balanced with Parslow at centre half and Courtney at right back. R&D never looked likely to score.

Constantine was a useful addition and Lawless and Till had great games. Minus points were Barrett, Smith and Rankine, who, for varying reasons, need to be dropped.

Why isn't McDermott playing?

Ditto bertieb much beeter second half. I think any two of the three you mention should be 'rested' so to speak.

I am not an advocate of whole sale changes that's all. Ingham is not looking too solid either.

But there are signs we are getting there with some far better individual performances than we saw at Fleetwood.

Don't talk rubbish people! The McGills have no intensions of leaving the club!
This is just a rumour by some so called york city fans to stir up the club and its REAL fans.
This rumour started because these farse supporters didn't like the fact we had sold Brodie but lets face it, it was good business especially when he would have gone for jack all come the end of the season.
Great result today against a strong opposition on form, well done lads!
I disagree with many peoples comments on this page, i thought we played v.well and just lacked the finishing touch. Leon looked good aswell.

No it's not just about the result, people want to be entertained also. We need new fans for the club to survive and on many occasions last season I heard people say they would not bother coming again the football was so poor.We are a club losing money week on week and last season our crowds were awfull because people did not like what was on offer.Scoring a goal then sitting back and defending for 80 minutes against part time teams is not bringing the punters in.I find it sad that there are people on here that thought yesterdays performance was good. Without the late goals what would the reaction have been to the actual football ?
Stevenage played to their strengths yes but where were the people flocking to watch it.

I despaire at the amount of negativity on this sight .I have watched City for more than 50 years and the standard of football now is still good and probably better than the old 4th Division days when er sort re election.
Of course people do want all out attacking football and goals galore but unless you are a Chelsea or Man U it's not a realistic option.Winning the game is what it's all about and to do it playing good entertaining football is a bonus. We can be entertaining as we like but the priority has to be to win.
Martin Foyle has changed our fortunes round and is still building , sure he makes mistakes but he seems to be able to find some good players but at the moment he still doesn't know his bst team.
McDermott and others will get their chance it's a long season and when they do then it is up to them to perform .
I am amazed at Rankine being criticised I thought the sheer EFFORT and DETERMINATION shown yesterday was first class, things don't always go for him but his efforts make openings for others. At the end of the game he was totally shattered through his efforts.
I would also remind those individuals who constantly snipe at the McGills whose cash and efforts have kept the club in existance that without them I very much doubt we would have a club at all.
I do not mind lively discussion as all supporters have differing views but I would like to see an end to the negativity which seems to be on the increase and people SUPPORTING and getting behind the club. The management want what we supporters want..... a succesfull entertaining football club back in the Football League
Yes let us have lively discussion but an end to negativity for the sake of it.

Of course and so would I i'm just frustrated at times at the way we don't push forward and try and finish games off under Foyle. I actually feel we have the players but they are held back by the negative attitude of the manager. I think we could have gone up as champions last season with a more positive attitude in games.
Tibs I understand what you are saying and we do all want the best for the team. But this is still an open forum and feel at times constructive points are just shot down as negative. My points about the likes of Till out wide with lawless playing in his natural position were shot down as trying to tell Foyle what to do.
You can't have a lively forum if both points of view are not recognised

Read all previous posts. Re Brodie, anything over £200,000 is good business for a player who could go for 'nowt' at the end of the season. Lest we forget Stevenage only got £135,000/£150,000 for Morrison and he is now playing for Wales! To the McGill bashers - only have a go if you can replace them and pour money into the club. If you haven't got the proverbial pot to p*ss in then shut up. If they walk away who is going to step in? Whilst the football under Martin Foyle may not suit all if it gets us out of this league then .... I also remember the football we used to play under John Bird which was awful and Barry Lyons where we were so bad we were comical!

It was and they were sacked. Every York City team that has been promoted in my life time has played attractive,on the floor football using two genuine wingers. Playing dour, defensive football does not give you a better chance of promotion despite what some on here seem to think.

After all the events last week this was a great result, against a makeshift but seemingly organized team.
I don't think it lacked entertainment ,it was tense and the lads played some good passing football at times.
On the past Terry Dolan's team was also dreadful to watch,he was the 0 - 0 king.
i would take 40 ugly wins any day to get us out of this horrible league.
I do feel sorry for the younger fans who were not as lucky to see the glory days of the 70's and 80's,hang on in guys get behind the team and better times will come.

Agree with tips above thought it was a good performance. Had Ranks converted that easy chance it would gave been 3 nil with the opposition not having a single shot on target. Can't grumble at that.
Thought our control of the ball was better with one piece in their box from Barrett in 2nd half being sublime.
Very pleased going home and looking forward to Wrexham where I expect us to get something, hopefully all 3 points.
Only 2 points behind Luton.

A welcome win on Saturday against a what has to be said on the day a really poor R&D outfit.
I must have been watching a different game to those who thought Rushden were decent.
City had all the possesion whilst not really testing the keeper & were the only side ever going to win the match.
It was a nice touch to remember the late David Longhurst on the 20th anniversary of his passing.
I,like many others on here was at that game against Lincoln & could not believe what had just happened in front of us.

HA! Terry Dolan, I'd forgotten about those days. My memory tends to shut out the really poor years that City fans have had to endure. Also, that final season under Brass when we went out of the league... woeful of course. The sheer embarassment of being stuffed 5-1 at Scarborough on a freezing cold New Years day etc, etc,. Can I remind people that in those (thankfully), far off days that City never had a chance of getting to Wembley. We've now been twice to 'The Arch,' been involved in some really exciting play-offs, cup runs, and played some attractive football for this level. Yes, we are still in a dodgy, but ultimately tough league, but if you look at the attendances of those ex conference clubs that are now plying their trade in Leagues 2 and 1 respectively, you will note that their attendances have hardly altered one jot, and struggling to live financially with the regular league boys. Finally, I think Brodie going was a good deal for the club, financially and for Brodie. However, my point of view would be to state that the team might, just might, be a more cohesive force with less emphasis on one 'star' player. I would like to think that MF is actually relieved to offload a player that seemed to have an abrasive effect on his team mates at times. Also, on the biggest of occasions, such as Wembley, too many players 'froze' on the day and did not come up to the standard required to get us into the League, which unfortunately includes Brodie. That's why I think a move to a fellow Conference side at THAT kind of money HAS to be to City's advantage. Owing to work commitments I haven't yet attended a home match but have listened avidly to match commentary's so far. Judging by the performances, the off-pitch events etc, I think City are on a slow burn this season. A few more solid results and a top half spot by the end of September will see us ready for a good push on to a play-off spot. Watch out for all the manouvering between the so-called 'big' sides in the next few months. Come on City!

eborexile says...

I agree with Sir Alex. We made a good Rushden team look decidedly average. Some good play from City - Barrets pass out to Till prior to Rankines volley was as sublime as the one from McGurk to the opposite side. (watch the highlights)Parslow performed well in both roles although clearly more comfortable in the centre.
Smith went about his job quietly and Rankine worked hard but no doubt the knives of the critics remain sharpened to make personal attacks.
Admittedly not a rip roaring affair but at least I wasn't thinking about comparisons with beach donkeys this time.
