A GLORIOUS ninth was celebrated by Simon Dyson to put the York-born golf star into contention for the Omega European Masters title.
He reached the half-way point of the tournament in joint sixth place on six-under after a four-under-par second round that was dotted with birdies.
The world number 65 started his second round at the tenth hole at the Crans-sur-Sierre course, with the Swiss Alps serving as a magnificent backdrop, enduring an initial run as up and down as his first round 69.
Dropping shots at the 11th and 13th holes, he halted the slump with successive birdies on 14 and 15 before then suffering another bogey at the very next hole.
By the end of the outward nine he had improved his position by one shot. But then came Dyson’s dream number nine.
The 32-year-old, who boasts four European Tour titles in the last five years, sparkled on the inward nine.
He bagged no fewer than five birdies out of the first eight holes – collecting valuable shots on the first and third holes, before then delivering a birdie barrage of three in a row at the fifth, sixth and seventh to be return home in 31 for a four-under-par 67.
The overnight leader on 11-under-par was Edoardo Molinari, European Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie’s surprise wildcard pick after the Italian won the Johnnie Walker Classic at Gleneagles last week.
