Match preview: York City v Rushden & Diamonds

JONATHAN Smith insists only three points against Rushden & Diamonds can start to make up for York City’s disappointing 2-1 defeat against Fleetwood Town.

The midfielder, a summer signing from Forest Green Rovers, was part of the Minstermen starting line-up which struggled against the Blue Square Bet Premier new boys.

Smith, who has been in and out of manager Martin Foyle’s 11 so far, said he was hugely disappointed with the loss – which leaves York with just one win from their opening six games – and declared there had to be a much improved performance at Bootham Crescent tomorrow.

“It has got to be. It has to be three points,” he said. “I am obviously disappointed. I thought I worked hard but, at the end of the day, if I am in the team I want to win games.

“To be honest, Fleetwood looked a lot sharper than us and I don’t know why that was.

“We are all disappointed and the gaffer has let us know. He has told us it isn’t good enough and we all know.

“We are all working hard in training. The gaffer wants us to play a certain way and we were trying to put that into play but, before Monday, we thought we had been making progress and doing well.”

The 23-year-old revealed he has been putting in hard work during training to ensure he remains part of Foyle’s plans and believes City still have the players to make a run for league success.

No-go for Faz

FORMER York City striker Craig Farrell is one of a host of Rushden & Diamonds players ruled out with injury ahead of their trip to Bootham Crescent tomorrow.

The ex-Minstermen goal-getter has a groin problem and he will be joined on the sidelines by defender Justin Miller, who is serving a one-match ban after being sent off against Kettering.

Manager Justin Edinburgh has watched his side pick up ten points from their opening six matches with Kettering beaten 1-0 on Bank Holiday Monday and Grimsby dispatched 4-1 at Nene Park a week ago.

Rushden (probable): Roberts, Porter, Asano, Stuart, Robinson, Johnson, Power, Spence, Green, Howe, Charles.

Match facts

Rushden have made six previous League visits and honours are even with two wins to each club and two draws.

The first meeting at Bootham Crescent was on the opening day of the 2001/2 campaign when Diamonds won here 1-0 on their Football League debut. The following season the game ended goal-less.

The other four games at York have been in the Conference. In 2006/7 City won 3-1 with Clayton Donaldson (2) and Steve Bowey on the scoresheet.

The next season the visitors won 3-2 with Michael Rankine one of their scorers. Craig Farrell, later to join Diamonds in an exchange deal with Rankine, netted along with Paul Robinson in a 2-0 City win in 2008/9 and the corresponding fixture last term finished 0-0. The line-up for this encounter on August 11, 2009, was: Ingham, Purkiss, McGurk, Parslow, Meredith, Lawless (Smith), Mackin, Barrett, Ferrell (Nelthorpe), Brodie, Rankine (Gash).

Along with Farrell and Rankine other players to have represented both clubs include Ray Warburton and Chris Beardsley.

Absolutely right Jonny Smith – only 3 points will be accepted by the fans. It is time to forget about those that have left the club and just concentrate on the personnel we have. I am convinced Gash and Rankine will form a formidable partnership. I really do consider this as the last chance saloon for Foyle and would expect changes if we don’t bag the victory tomorrow. Maybe I’m over optimistic as I’ve enjoyed a lovely holiday but I feel we can win 2-0 tomorrow with Gash scoring first.

First game since the board forced Brodie to go so they could earn a quick buck. Hope City win but if not we all know who to blame. Jason!

The snipeing and bickering continues I see on these posts. What we need is the supporters to get behind the team and management, starting tomorrow

Will the departure of Brodie make much difference? i dont think it will. Foyle has many able players to choose
from but so far seems unable to select
the right combination and strategy to excite the fans and frighten the opposition, which i am certain they are capable of doing. Foyles statement "if it does not work on saturday i will have to explore the loan market" is quite frankly disturbing and utter bull.

Blaming the Mcgills for anything is crazy and anyone who does so is a utter moron. They saved this club and we wouldnt have a club to bicker about if it wasnt for them. I didnt want Brodie to go but what happens at the end of the season when he leaves for nothing? If the club knew he wasnt going to sign another contract then they have done the right thing.

MCGILL OUT
Has this woman got too much time on her hands? Perhaps she has obsessive compulsive disorder or maybe she is just as nutty a fruit cake, either way she obviously has no grasp of what is and what is not a great deal for the club. Brodie's performances this season were nowhere near what we should expect and I believe he was upsetting the dressing room . Let's move on . COME ON CITY

Time to move on Brodes nice lad has gone hope he goes on to better things than Crawley though good luck. MF & AP have an eye for a good player & will bring in the necessary meanwhile they will have to get this group of decent footballers ticking & working hard for each other. We need now what we needed last season more goals from all over the park & there are signs that we have the players. Get behind the team, I always get my lads to clap in the team even if they have had an iffy game as most of them give all they can on the day. Best to ignore Anthea she seems to have obsessive compulsive issues to deal with the time I met Jason McGill he seemed a decent sort with the best interests of the club at heart even if he is not prepared to bankrupt himself over it. So lets move on & give the team a welcome on Saturday.
