Nestlé Flag get off to flier in York Sunday Morning Football League


Reigning York Sunday Morning Football League division one champions Nestlé Flag got their title defence off to a flying start.

Flag cruised to a 4-0 win over newly-promoted Acomb Celtic thanks to a Chris Dyson hat-trick and a goal from John James.

Derwent United and Haxby Lions shared the points in a game that finished 3-3.

Newly-promoted Lions led 2-0 at the break with goals from Steve Fratson and Tom Matthews, but Derwent hit back in the second period with strikes from Dave Bradshaw, Dean Nuttall and Simon Cook. Pete Dransfield netted Haxby’s third.

Severus came away with all the points after beating Hounds 2-1 with goals from Mark Triffitt and Gary Smith, Alan Jackson netting Hounds consolation goal.

In division two Albion Vaults saw off York St John 5-1 with goals from Adam Durnin, John Ginty, Dave Reasbeck and Chris Harkin with a brace.

Cueball beat Wigginton Grasshoppers 3-2 with goals from Jon Sargent, Tom Wheatland and Andy Thompson. Hoppers repliedwith a penalty from Tom Coates and a Steve Jarvis strike.

A hat-trick from Paul Tiffany, plus single strikes for Scott and Ben Garrard, gave Hambleton a 5-2 win over visitors Acomb WMC in their third division clash, in which Matty Bastock and Scott Nicholas replied.

Division four new team Bubwith Nomads beat Dynamo Megahorse 4-3 thanks to a brace from Will Nicholson, plus strikes from Simon Holder and James Andrews. Dynamo marksmen were Sam Cowley (2) and Wayne Langan.

York Medics – also playing their first game in the league – beat Huntsmen 4-3 thanks to a first-half hat-trick from Greg Chambers and a late strike from Andy McCormick. Huntsmen hit back through Mark Harrison, Danny May and Ian Breheney.

In the league cup first round, a second-half strike from Nick McBride gave Marcia Grey a 1-0 win over visitors FC Barlby.
