THE sound of champions falling graced the ladies pairs event in the 43rd York Open Bowls tournament.
First to exit in the second round were the 2007 and 2008 title-holders Carol Williams and Doreen Richardson.
They tumbled out 18-15 to J Foulds and Dot Turpin, who advanced serenely to the semi-finals.
But the surprise package now face a daunting barrier to reach the final. They are up against England Under-25 international Zoe Eagles and county stalwart Helen Walker.
Also bowing out of the second round were Melanie Brooke and Carol Instone, the 2006 winners.
They lost at the first extra end to be beaten 17-16 by Maureen Walker and Pat Walker.
The semi-finalists in the men’s singles Mike Bruce, who was last year’s runner-up to Eric Wilkinson, Scott Burrell, Jim Moulds and 2004 winner Gary Bunce.
