Special Olympics City of York are staging an open day at David Lloyd Leisure Centre in Hull Road on Saturday, from 2pm to 4pm.
Organisers are inviting young people and adults with a learning disability and their families to attend and have a go at football, tennis, athletics boccia, short mat bowls and new age kurling.
Spokeswoman Val French said: “This is a great opportunity to meet the coaches and members of the committee and find out what Special Olympics is all about. A squad of 19 athletes went to the National Games in Leicester last year and came home with as many medals.”
“Two young people, Laura Campbell and Joe Hadfield, have been selected to represent Great Britain at the European Games in Poland in September in tennis and athletics respectively.
“This is the most amazing opportunity to make new friends, try new sports and, who knows, you may be the next world champion.
“Committee members will be on hand to give you all the information you need and there will be a display of photos from the National Games.” Anyone interested in the open afternoon can turn up on the day.
