BASEMENT side Heworth ARLC produced a much-improved performance as they went down 24-6 at Stanningley in National Conference division one.

The Villagers held the lead for 11 first-half minutes after full-back Mike Welsh followed up Chris Smith’s kick to touch down and second-rower Adam Jobling converted to cancel out Stanningley’s opening try by John Sherron.

However, a try by Anthony Glynn edged the hosts back in front at half-time and they added tries by Eddie Norfolk, Jack Bussey and Glynn and two goals by Frank Mayfield after the break.

Mark Hayes was Heworth’s man of the match, closely followed by player-coach Smith and prop Tom Speck.
