NEEDING four points to guarantee an eighth successive Yorkshire Ladies League title York were up against North Cave.
York dropped five shots across the board on the last end while only picking up one for themselves and went down 72-67 gaining only three points from the game.
Their only success came from Carol Instone’s rink, who only lost three ends between the sixth and 21st ends to go from 5-4 down to win 23-12.
Melanie Brooke’s team looked to have the game won as they led 19-14 with three to play but they drew 19-19.
Away, Maureen Thomas’ rink won their last three ends scoring four shots, but it wasn’t enough as they lost 18-16, while Sheila Turpin’s team found the going tough. They dropped ten shots in the last ends to lose 23-11.
York needed New Earswick to pick up one point from their game against Thornaby to retain the title but a patched up Earswick side were well beaten 98-56.
They lost all four rinks, though they nearly picked up two winning teams at home.
Pat Walker’s led 18-15 with three ends to play but went down 20-18, while Maureen Wood’s were level at 15-15 but lost 19-17.
Away, Kath Sykes’ team were level at 7-7 after five ends but could only win one more and lost 31-9.
Pat Storey’s team paid for dropping 13 unanswered shots between the 11th and 15th ends to lose 27-12.
Selby escaped relegation with an emphatic 108-43 win over Scarborough picking up eight points.
It was the away teams who prevailed. Sue Williamson’s rink won all but two ends to finish 48-2, while Jane Simpson’s rallied from 7-4 down to win 21-11.
At home, Cynthia Birkinshaw’s were also in top form comfortably winning 23-8.
Cynthia Wright’s team yielded seven shots on the first three ends before losing 22-16.
New Earswick and Scarborough are both relegated, while champions-elect Selby need one point to regain their crown against second-placed York on Saturday from noon.
