Yorkshire young guns shine in Barbados

YOUNG guns Azeem Rafiq and Oliver Hannon-Dalby led a superb Yorkshire bowling display on the first day of their two-day friendly against Derbyshire at the 3 Ws Oval in Barbados yesterday.

England under-19s captain Rafiq returned 5-21 with his off-spin, while 20-year-old paceman Hannon-Dalby picked up three, including two in an over shortly after the lunch break.

Derbyshire were bowled out for just 185 in 84.4 overs of their allocation of 90, leaving openers Joe Sayers and Adam Lyth four overs to navigate before close. They raced to 25-0.

Andrew Gale lost his first toss as the county’s new captain, but Derbyshire’s openers Paul Borrington and captain Wayne Madsen came up against a miserly opening spell without much luck from Steve Patterson, who finished the day with only one wicket to his name.

Borrington was the first to go in the seventh over when he was trapped lbw to a full Hannon-Dalby ball.

Leg-spinner Adil Rashid, who had two catches dropped by Anthony McGrath in the slips, claimed the second wicket when he uprooted Garry Park’s leg stump with a ball which seemed to keep low.

South African Madsen (19) retired hurt shortly before lunch with a tight groin, giving Borrington the opportunity to bat again later in the day under these friendly rules.

Derbyshire went into lunch at 66-2 after 30 overs, but were 75-4 just three overs into the afternoon session.

Hannon-Dalby, whose only first-class wicket to date is the prolific former England batsman Mark Ramprakash back in 2008, had Greg Smith caught at cover by Rafiq and Chesney Hughes trapped lbw just two balls later.

Rafiq picked up his first wicket when he forced wicketkeeper Lee Goddard into a loose shot to mid-wicket. He also had Dan Redfern caught behind by Jonny Bairstow and Jake Needham caught at short-leg by Lyth to reduce the score to 140-7.

Rafiq completed his five-for when he had Borrington trapped lbw and the big-hitting Tim Groenewald stumped by Bairstow. Redfern top scored for the Peakites with 32.

While this display will please director of professional cricket Martyn Moxon greatly, he still has plenty to work on. Quite understandably, Yorkshire were a little rusty in the field early on. That was highlighted by McGrath’s two drops.

But, at least, the performances from inexperienced individuals will have given Moxon, Gale and the rest of the management team an indication that they can do the business when called upon.

Now it is down to the batters to do their stuff at this picturesque venue right in the heart of the Cave Hill campus at the University of the West Indies.

Yorkshire should pass Derbyshire’s scored comfortably within the 90 overs, but will almost certainly continue batting for the practice. Both sides are playing 12 players, with one not batting and them taking it in turns to come off the field in hot and humid conditions.

Meanwhile, Joe Root, Rich Pyrah and Ben Sanderson are playing for a Combined Counties XI against a University Select XI.
