York indoor bowlers keep title hopes alive

York kept alive hopes of taking the Yorkshire League division one title when they beat Scarborough 84-70, picking up 16 points to move back to the top.

They are level on points with Featherstone, who finish their campaign against Thornaby on Saturday while York complete their fixtures against relegation-threatened North Cave.

At home, David Stroughair’s rink trailed 11-9 after dropping a four on the ninth end but romped in to triumph 26-16.

Phil Emmerson’s team led 22-12 with five ends to play but they had to hang on against their foes’ rally before winning 22-21.

Away, Paul Humphrey’s team stormed back from a 15-6 deficit with nine ends to play. But they won them all, scoring singles on eight to post a 19-15 success.

Mark Clarke’s team were just edged out 18-17.

York and Featherstone have guaranteed themselves a place in the Challenge Cup at New Earswick on Saturday, March 27, with the third-placed team Thornaby and second division champions Redcar.
