York City back in play-off places after win at Mansfield Town

YORK City climbed back into a play-off position after an excellent 1-0 victory at Mansfield Town last night.

The Minstermen claimed their first win in eight games thanks to Courtney Pitt’s 61st-minute strike and, although Richard Brodie’s penalty was later saved, the visitors secured a deserved three points.

Former City centre-back Luke Foster, now skipper at Field Mill, was also harshly sent off on 82 minutes.

City moved into fifth spot with Kettering going down 2-0 at Altrincham.

Martin Foyle’s men are now two points ahead of the Poppies and have played a game less.

He said: “We have had a poor run but not played badly and this was a massive three points. There was some fantastic football from us and we dominated from start to finish.

“We also looked a bit nastier than we have done in recent matches.”

Great performance last night and the home crowd completely outsung by City's amazing away support.
Mansfield must be wondering what hit them. That's probably the end of their play-off challenge.
One minor niggle though - along with most of the crowd, I knew exactly where Brodie was going to put the penalty, so it's no surprise that the keeper did too (but still a great save). If Richard really wants to be a master penalty taker he's got to learn to vary it a bit.
A great result nevertheless. More of the same on Saturday please.

About bl00dy time too. Finally we show some grit coupled with playing some decent football in patches. My worry is that Brodes is just not firing and last night was anonymous for big parts of the game. I think we all had a feeling that he wouldn't put that pen away but at least it wasn't make or break and didn’t have that much bearing on the game. This was a performance similar to away at Wimbledon in that we looked very comfortable and the 3 points always felt safe as soon as Pitt put us 1-0. Keep it up City. Time to get heads down and put a winning run together again. Hopefully this milder weather will help the BC pitch for the forthcoming games.
I take exception for some of the comments aimed at me on here - I'm NOT negative just OBJECTIVE which a lot of you are not. The only difference is that I don't let my passion for City get in the way of my analysis of how we have underperformed disgracefully in the last few weeks. I also cannot agree with MF about "not playing badly" in this bad run – we have Martin and against part-timers too.

Predicted nil-nil but v happy to be proved wrong. Really important as it took 3 points off Mansfield too. Do the same to Wimbledon on Saturday and that will be a big step towards the play-offs. Winnable run of games towards the end of the season as well, should look to take at least 4 points off Grays home and away, as I hope we don't have to get anything at Stevenage on the last day. Def more optimistic now.

Luke, as long as they deliver then no, if the rot sets in again (which all of us hope doesn't happen) then we will see.

Slightly off topic but noticed yesterday in the pre-match piece that it was 36 years to the day since the match v Bristol Rovers....

''1974: In a top of the table Division Three (League One) clash at Bootham Crescent City beat Bristol Rovers 2-1 with Ian Holmes scoring a last-minute penalty. Chris Jones was the other scorer and the attendance was 11,066. City were second in the league behind Rovers.''

Does anyone else have any memories of the above game? It has always stood out in my mind as being one of the best matches I've ever seen at BC, (I was 11 years old, where does the time go?) Am I right in thinking Rovers had 2 players sent off that day, and Holmes' winning penalty was scored deep into injury time? If anyone could confirm this or add any other memories from the match I'd appreciate it! Cheers.

Let's hope for a big turnout on Saturday and get right behind the team.Onwards and upwards

Completely outclassed Mansfield last night, I was particularly impressed with the midfield with Harsley, Clarke and Barratt controlling possession and Pitt providing the cutting edge going forward, culminating in a goal fit to win any game.

I remember bits of it tc. Bristol scored near the end to equalise if I am correct.

Memory tells me it was John Woodward who was fouled, and after a Bristol sending off (yes the second of the match) Ian Holmes scored well into injury time with what was just about the last bit of action.

Excellent result last night, just what the Doctor ordered, now for Saturday.

Now then Chap's. I hate to say my quote was correct.....(nearly anyway) "I did say the Mansfield game would get the train back on it's tracks". True. However I also stuck my neck out and said "thrash" Well, we never thrashed them but the train is as predicted back on track. I will be there Saturday the cheers the lads on in turning over AFC Wimbledon. All the earlier fuss from passionate fans is fair enough. But, as with all sides you can have a tricky spell. I hope this was ours and it's "onwards and upwards" now. Well done all-keep it going now right thro till Wembley show down with Luton. Keep the faith all.....

No probs tc anytime. I have a few good and bad memories from that season.

Like a 2-1 defeat at Halifax that cost us the league.

I am sure Chris Jones hit a shot against the post very hard that it went well back up field and halifax scored.

I am sure I havn't dreamt that happening, if someone can help me with it. We took a great following of I guess 2000 plus that night.

Oh yeah,
I remember that game. Think I was about 15 at the time, we got the penelty because of a challenge on John Wooward that just about put him orbit and the culprit, rightly. got his marching orders. I remember their manager moaned about the sending off which was a bit rich. They had a one on one with the keeper but Greame Crawford made a stunning save at the forward's feet.

What crazy days they were

I reckon we have turned the corner and should make the play-off's after a very good win last night. Not too bothered who we might get in the play-off's but watch for Luton coming hot on the rails of Stevenage and Oxford. Stevenage and Oxford still to play each other and Luton could be the dark horses to go straight up. More of the same saturday please.

Thanks for the compliments guys! Seriously though I'm not really IH but he's still my favourite city player. I remember the great understanding he had with Barry Lyons on the right hand side.
That was my first season and my stand out memories are:-
1) My first match, a league cup replay against Orient. IH scored the first goal & Ian Butler got the winner in extra time, a great volley from just outside the penalty area.
2) There was a flag at the corner of the enclosure/Bootham Crescent end and, every game, it was lowered to signify there was so long (15 minutes?) left to play.
3) A home game against Bournemouth which was really close but we ended up scoring 2 late goals to give us a 4-1 victory.
4) Arriving at the ground about 75 mins before kick off to ensure we could get a place at the front of the Pop. Stand (they put the seats in the following season).
5) The great, almost unreal, atmosphere at the final home game of the season against Oldham and Phil Burrows receiving the player of the season award.
Oh happy days.
Was at last night's game and it was a very convincing, and dominant, display. Hoping for more of the same on Saturday.
Come on City.

I was 6 at the time and went to this match with my best mate and his Dad, the late Roy Elwood, who was circulation manager of the Press for many years, as well as Secretary of the York Sunday Lague for many years. Chris Jones put us ahead from a far post nod-in after a classic Jimmy Seal flick-on at the near post from a Chris Topping corner. The Pirates equalised with about 5 minutes to go but then came the penalty before the pitch invasion. My most vivid memory of that season is of thousands of City fans crossing Leeds Road in Huddersfield and bringing traffic to a stop. Golden days!

Just one little point.
A couple of people during the dodgy run had said Foyle should go, because he hadn't strengthened the side enough from January on.
So, can I just congratulate Graham, Clarke, Harsley and Pitt who all had very good games last night, and were all signed in or since January (yes, Graham was on loan before that, but he still represents strengthening post the August window, and actually signed in January).

Oh, and Colin, if you really think you were being objective and dispassionate, you are kidding no-one but yourself. The fact you were calling for the managers head the minute the winning run ended suggests you either have a personal issue (so, subjective) or, more likely I hope, your passion for York clouded your judgement and had you making a knee-jerk over-reaction to an inevitable loss of form. It's an understandable reaction, but the objective view was that things were just balancing themselves out, we were in the play-off frame on merit, and would turn it around.

I was also at the Bristol Rovers match in 1974, and I vividly remember the flag outside the supporters club, which is mentioned in a posting above, it was always lowered 5 minutes before the end of the match. This amusingly prompted everyone in the crowd to say in harmony "Flags Down". Memories of much bigger crowds, and a much better team - But back to the present - "What a welcome relief last nights win at Mansfield Town was, lets hope its a springboard for the future, the play-offs are still in our own hands".

In that season - 73/74 - you'd usually see the same face in the crowd. I remember in the centre section of the Pop Stand there were always two chaps, a youngish tall guy and an older small chap who reminded me of Albert Steptoe. They were particularly vocal and without failure, at some point in every home game, one of them (I think it was the old guy) would shout at the Linesman "Get that flag & stick it up your a**e. It might make you see better". Always brought howls of laughter from the crowd and made a lasting impression on me as a young lad at the time.

Colin, you have a nerve! You have repeatedly called those of us who (despite our occasional criticisms and concerns) have advocated patience and faith in the management "thick", "deluded" and "stupid"; you have been consistently negative, whenever points have been dropped, especially so during the recent barren spell. Now you're complaining about the reactions of others to your views. The remedy is simple; if you don't like our responses to your provocative and silly comments, don't make them on a public forum - it's common sense, really.

Great result last night and here's a tip for those few people who complain. Why don't you just wait until the end of the season to see where we finish. Even if we finish out of the play-offs, it has still been the best season for a few years.

ROCK_Y. I think Bruce was one of the many nicknames I've had over the years but am not entirely convinced that I'm the person you think I am!
Don't mind people giving opinions & constructive critiscism on here but hope everyone gets behind the lads for the rest of our home games. Still seems to be many negative impatient people who can moan & shout abuse at the first signs of things not going to plan. And am dismayed at the number of people who seem pleased that the balls not running for Brodes at the moment. Alright, he's not perfect but he's a great lad who's learning all the time and I shudder to think where we might be without his goals over the last couple of seasons.
